With the arrival of Emirates’ daily direct flights from Dubai to Adelaide, South Australia is set to reap significant economic benefits. Last night, the first Emirates Boeing 777-200LR landed, marking the return of the airline after it ceased operations during the pandemic. The flight marked a pivotal moment for the state’s economic and tourism recovery.
A raft of benefits is anticipated from this development. The reinstated service is expected to yield an annual economic impact of $160 million, with $62 million forecast from tourism spending alone. This underscores the strategic importance of the Emirates connection, not merely as a transport link but as a vital artery pulsating economic vibrancy across regions.
The daily flights are scheduled to facilitate more than 220,400 passengers travelling between Dubai and Adelaide annually. This endeavour will not only boost tourist numbers but also create over 315 full-time equivalent jobs in tourism, in a big win for local employment.
Further financial injections come from the cargo the flights will carry. Each flight offers 14 tonnes of cargo capacity, amounting to a massive 196 tonnes weekly. This capability is estimated to enhance the value of freight exports by $98 million per year, providing a critical boost for local industries including premium fresh food and wine producers, offering them direct and swift access to Middle Eastern markets.
Premier Peter Malinauskas detailed the broader implications of the service, highlighting that the continuous flights will extensively benefit the state’s economy by supporting jobs, fostering trade, and attracting tourists. He stated, “This reconnection to Dubai and beyond will benefit our economy, creating jobs and opening up new opportunities for trade and tourism.”
Emirates’ commitment to Adelaide cements a deeper strategic engagement with Australia, an essential market for the Dubai-based airline. Nabil Sultan, Emirates Executive Vice President, praised the mutual collaboration that facilitated the return to Adelaide, noting, “The Emirates flights not only facilitate trade flows but allow us to provide South Australians with access to a world-class travel experience.”
In addition to tourism, the reinstatement of the Emirates route plays a crucial role in enhancing Adelaide’s connectivity on a global scale. The operational logistics entail Emirates’ EK440 flight departing from Dubai at 2am, arriving in Adelaide at 8:50pm, with the return flight EK441 leaving Adelaide at 10:40pm and touching down in Dubai at 5:20am.
Adelaide Airport’s Managing Director, Brenton Cox, reaffirmed the broader significance of this service, indicating that it “will attract international visitors to Adelaide and be critical for our tourism economy, for trade and our broader economy.”
This reinstated service follows other major international airlines enhancing operations to Adelaide, including China Southern Airlines and Air New Zealand, which signifies a robust and optimistic outlook for South Australia’s connectivity and economic prospects in the post-pandemic era. The concerted effort by the South Australian Tourism Commission and Adelaide Airport in securing such partnerships underscores their commitment to driving economic growth and development through enhanced international connectivity.
