Getaway: Escape to McLaren Vale’s Luxury Micro Accommodation, Hotel California Road

You can gaze across the vines from your own personal tub.

McLaren Vale’s Inkwell Wines opened Hotel California Road last Winter, and it’s still truly one of the most unique accommodation options we’ve seen in SA. Set in the vineyard, the micro-hotel has only three suites, each with its own private deck and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Suites are decked out for the ultimate adult escape, with floating custom king-size beds, twin rain showers and vanities, a leather couch, a mini-bar stocked with Inkwell Wines, and decorated with original Aboriginal artwork, and vintage Persian rugs. The room is also packed with all the modern fittings – high end audio and video, a giant TV and USB charging.

And at this Hotel California, you can check out any time, as long as it’s before 10am, and you are in fact allowed to leave.

Built with sustainability in mind, the suites are part of a new building at the vineyard made up of 20 recycled shipping containers, and run off-grid on solar power and batteries with triple filtered rain water.

The building also includes a new wine tasting room, where you can taste Inkwell’s single vineyard wines which are all fermented without additions. Work your way through the daily tasting menu, or book ahead for the vintage tasting which includes a private structured, sit down wine experience of older vintages.

The building’s rooftop deck offers impressive views from Mount Lofty down to the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Hotel California Road is open seven days, with rates starting at $225 per night, which includes continental breakfast. Click here for more.

Inkwell Wines is at 377 California Road, Tatachill. The wine tasting room is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am-5pm.
