Brand-new European-inspired wine bar, Ballet, has opened up in Glenelg, capturing the tastes of a refined and adventurous segment of wine lovers.

Glenelg locals and business owners Mike and Mel aspire to bring a bold new approach to Glenelg’s food and drink scene, serving a generous list of premium and international varietals, along with a delicious snacking menu.

Mike says, “people are willing to try new wines, so we want to put new wines into people’s glasses”. He spoke passionately about serving customers diverse and exciting drops to reactions of delight and satisfaction.

After 10 years in the industry, Mike is set for an inspiring new chapter, with plans in the near future to open a rooftop venue just down the road from Ballet. The announcement of Jetty Road’s $40 million transformation is set to elevate Glenelg into a world class precinct, home to unique venues like Ballet.

As a passionate Glenelg local, Mike believes the area should have something for everyone, commenting a “rising tide floats all ships”. He says he is committed to supporting a multifaceted locale full of unique venues which will make Glenelg a real get-together destination. One of his biggest hopes for the area is that patrons will “spend their night in Glenelg instead of getting on the tram and heading to the city”.

“The idea for Ballet Wine Bar came to me while travelling through Europe’s wine regions with my fiancé, Emily,” Mike said.

He expressed his love for the relaxed, classy European service which operated in harmony with fantastic wine, saying: “I thought it would be really cool to bring that style of wine bar to Glenelg.”

The playful name, Ballet, stems from Mike’s archives, originally the title of a conceptual music festival. He says the name really clicked as it lends itself to the bar’s spirited character while bringing a touch of class.

The creative and elegant architecture, led by SMFA and Elite Building Co, is an integral part of the bar’s personality. Mike is exceptionally proud of the way Ballet’s interior perpetuates the bar’s classy atmosphere while emphasising the “old building’s amazing character”. Mike’s vision for the bar is to “cater to a market that hasn’t been catered to” in Glenelg and accommodate wine drinkers with a beautiful globally minded selection of wines.

A “pre and post-dinner crowd” is what Mike is targeting, emphasising that “wine will always remain the focus”. He is over the moon to have had remarkably positive feedback from customers who are thrilled that the bar has “stuck to its guns” and “committed to stocking and pouring great wines”.
