After a decade of serving moviegoers in Adelaide’s beachside precinct, Event Cinemas Glenelg has announced it will soon close its doors, marking the end of an era for one of Jetty Road’s modern entertainment venues.
The cinema, located at 2 Cowper Street just off Jetty Road, will officially cease trading on 23 March 2026, according to operator Event Hospitality and Entertainment (EVT).
In a statement provided to Glam Adelaide, an EVT spokesperson confirmed the closure and thanked the local community for their support over the past decade.
“EVT’s tenancy at Event Cinemas Glenelg will cease trading on 23 March 2026,” the spokesperson said.
“EVT has been proud to operate at Glenelg over the past 10 years and would like to thank the many customers who have visited to enjoy the experience of movies on the big screen.”
The six-screen complex first opened in 2016, bringing a contemporary multiplex cinema experience back to Glenelg after the long-running Ozone Cinema closed years earlier.
Designed as a boutique-style cinema destination, the venue quickly became a favourite for locals and visitors looking to catch the latest releases after a day at the beach or dinner along Jetty Road. The complex features six screens seating between 100 and 207 guests, with plush leather seating and a fully licensed bar where guests can enjoy wine or beer alongside classic cinema snacks.
With its modern foyer, relaxed lounge areas and curated food and drink options, the venue aimed to deliver a more premium cinema-going experience compared to traditional suburban cinemas.
Over the past decade it has screened everything from Hollywood blockbusters and family films through to arthouse titles, becoming a regular fixture for date nights, weekend outings and rainy-day entertainment in the bay.
Despite its popularity, broader changes across the film industry have placed increasing pressure on cinemas worldwide in recent years. The pandemic disrupted film releases and cinema attendance, while the rise of streaming platforms has continued to reshape how audiences watch movies.
While the Glenelg location prepares to close, movie lovers will still be able to catch the big screen experience nearby.
“Customers can still enjoy the Event Cinemas experience at nearby Marion,” the spokesperson said.
Event Cinemas Marion has recently undergone major upgrades, including the introduction of V-Max and 4DX auditoriums, offering immersive cinema technology with motion seats and environmental effects designed to bring audiences closer to the action.
For Glenelg locals, the closure marks the end of a modern chapter in the suburb’s long cinema history — one that has seen generations gather in darkened theatres to share the magic of the movies by the sea.
