There are many important days on a calendar. January 1 signals the beginning of a new year, February 14 is Valentine’s Day, October 31 is Halloween and Christmas always falls on December 25. Now May 4 has increasingly become a new addition to this list.

A riff on the famous line ‘May the Force Be with You’, the quote has turned this particular date into something special. No surprises for guessing it came from the Star Wars series – one of the most successful movie franchises ever.

Arriving in 1977 with Episode 4: A New Hope, the Star Wars franchise has continually garnered legions of new fans. From the initial trilogy to prequels and a galaxy of merchandise, even most non-fans would know its basic premise. Most would know why May 4 is important for Star Wars enthusiasts as, like Christmas, it gives them an excuse for a celebration and to indulge in the six epic films made so far.

This is exactly what happened on Sunday May 4 at Event Cinemas Marion where the complex held a weekend Star Wars marathon. Beginning on Saturday with the three prequels, it continued in chronological order with the original trilogy the following day. Attending one of three nearly sold-out sessions, it was interesting observing the adoration the films have garnered. People dressed as Storm-troopers and Jedi, and a Darth Vader or two mingled with others wearing less futuristic attire. Light-sabres were gleefully wielded at passers-by as they awaited entry into cinemas.

As part of the first generation who grew up watching the movies and witnessing its enduring legacy, I was intrigued to see the cross-section of ages. The original films have represented pure escapism on a grand scale which has reached out to people from all walks of life. Mostly free of the sometimes-stinging criticisms the media affords to the likes of Star Trek, the early Star Wars tales are still assessable for new viewers ensuring its longevity.

The most amazing aspect of going to this event was knowing that most of the audience  – like me – had probably seen these films dozens of times. That they still cheered when the titles appeared, clapped when a villain got their just desserts or laughed at a corny joke spoke volumes of their pulling power. Somewhat reminiscent of the audience participation afforded to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the quotable dialogue and stunts had some audience members shouting at the on-screen mayhem.

Making this experience different was the rare opportunity to see the classic trilogy on a big screen. They easily lend themselves to a massive canvas and looked suitably spectacular. Details often missed on smaller TV screens could be found with the action and special effects still packing a punch. The biggest star of the show was John William’s orchestral score which still sounds amazing. The marriage of his music and the visuals worked perfectly. They complimented the performers who really connected with their memorable characters.

The MC in charge of the event commented on his surprise at the sheer number of fans there and was pleased with the response. Even those who weren’t in costume joined in the spirit of the enjoyable event and marveled at the spectacle on and off-screen. Watching the films again reminded me of the timelessness of creator George Lucas’ story and how it aided in my love for science fiction.

As one who eagerly bought the toys many years ago like everyone else, the marathon was an excuse to indulge in a childhood passion. From the fans at the screenings it seems this event will become an important part of people’s calendar as much as the other events we annually celebrate.
