Smoking Ceremony

Start Australia Day with the Smoking Ceremony, performed and hosted by Kaurna Elders on Kaurna land at Elder Park/Tarntanya Wama. In this First Nations custom, the burning of native plants produces cleansing smoke, to acknowledge ancestors and pay respect to Country, waters, and seas.

The topic for this year’s ceremony is Truth Telling, which will be addressed in a speech by Kaurna Elder Rosemary Kudnarto Wanganeen. Renowned singer and musician Nancy Bates will perform, and a stunning sand painting created by First Nations artists will be unveiled.
