Excitement rises as SA prepares to host T20 World Cup

A total of 45 matches will be played across Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney, ensuring the same national footprint as the postponed 2020 event.

Excitement is on the rise as South Australia is preparing to welcome seven of the 10 highest-ranked T20 teams later this year – including Australia.

Having locked in some of the world’s best cricketing superstars Adelaide Oval will feature newly crowned ICC Men’s T20 world champions Australia, along with the runners-up New Zealand, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 chief executive officer Michelle Enright today joined Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison for a tour of the Adelaide Oval, as part of key stakeholder meetings this week.

A total of 10 teams will play in Adelaide in six Super 12 double-header pool matches from 2 November, ahead of a semi-final on Sunday, 10 November.

The T20 World Cup will be the biggest global sporting event being held in Australia in 2022, with the world’s best cricketers from 16 international teams competing for the ultimate prize in the game’s most exciting format.

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 chief executive officer Michelle Enright today joined Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison for a tour of the Adelaide Oval, as part of key stakeholder meetings this week.

Zoe Bettison says that “we are very proud to be hosting this internationally recognised event here in South Australia and we are looking forward to reconnecting with a global community through ethos, fair play and great sportsmanship.”

“World Cup events are a great opportunity to bring people from all backgrounds and cultures together and the best way to introduce South Australia to the world. Now that the borders are open, we need to make sure we give sports fans and potential travellers the opportunity to visit our beautiful state and enjoy all that SA has to offer.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the world’s top cricket stars here in our beautiful state and we know that their talent on the field will inspire the next generation of South Australian players,” Bettison said.

Michelle Enright says that “we know the atmosphere at Adelaide Oval will be electric, and that fans will love the action and buzz the ICC T20 World Cup brings to a city.”

“South Australia has a terrific reputation for hosting major sporting events, and it’s great to be in Adelaide to tour the venue, get a feel for the city and learn more about the fan engagement activities that are planned; it’s all looking great and we’re excited to bring this global sporting event here later this year,” Enright says.

A total of 45 matches will be played across Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney, ensuring the same national footprint as the postponed 2020 event.

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 chief executive officer Michelle Enright said fans still have time to start planning their T20 World Cup experience.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is supported by the State Government, through the South Australian Tourism Commission.
