Adelaide’s iconic Thebarton Theatre, affectionately known as “The Thebby”, is undergoing a stunning $8 million transformation. We have the first construction images to share with you.
City of West Torrens Mayor Michael Coxon said the redevelopment and updating of this iconic theatre is a celebration of its rich history and a forward-looking investment in its future.
“As we approach the theatre’s centenary in 2028, this redevelopment will ensure it remains a vibrant part of our cultural fabric for many years to come.”
The long-awaited redevelopment of Thebarton Theatre is well underway, bringing key improvements that will enhance the experience for performers and audiences alike.

A brand new foyer and entranceway have been constructed, providing improved accessibility and a fresh look to the venue.
This will be complemented by an outdoor plaza, designed to elevate the spectator experience, offering a welcoming space for patrons before and after performances, and allowing for outdoor events to be held. For the first time in the theatre’s history, a lift will be installed, making the venue more accessible.

In addition to the exterior improvements, a new loading and delivery dock will streamline the logistical processes for load-in and load-out, ensuring smoother operations for events. The internal renovations also include fresh painting, refurbishments, and updated amenities throughout the building.
“Council is currently working on a visioning project for Henley Beach Road to inject new life into the whole area, so the upgrade of Thebarton Theatre is a vital step in this project. It also ensures that the theatre will continue to be a premier performance venue in South Australia,” added Mayor Coxon.
“Our collaboration with the State Government has enabled us to provide much-needed improvements which will enhance the experience for all who visit. We look forward to seeing the theatre thrive.”

The redevelopment, which will open later this year will encompass several key enhancements designed to enrich the audience experience:
- New Eastern Entry Foyer:Â A two-storey addition on the eastern side will serve as the main entrance, featuring a spacious foyer that seamlessly integrates with the theatre’s historic architecture.Â
- Upgraded Amenities: Patrons can look forward to modernised front-of-house facilities, including refurbished bars and lounges, ensuring comfort and convenience during events.
- Enhanced Accessibility: The inclusion of lifts and improved access points will make the venue more accessible to all guests.
- State-of-the-Art Loading Dock: A new loading dock on the northern side will streamline operations, allowing for more efficient set-up and dismantling of performances.
- Sustainable Initiatives: In line with contemporary environmental standards, solar panels will be installed on the roof, reducing the theatre’s carbon footprint.
