The Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia (GOCSA) is bringing the 16th Annual Hellenic Cultural Festival Odyssey to life, showcasing the vibrant Flavours of Greece from October 6 to November 12, 2023, across various venues in Adelaide.
The Odyssey Greek Festival is a cherished tradition in the heart of Adelaide, promising a plethora of over fifteen events, including the renowned Greek Film Festival. The festival will be a cultural mosaic featuring art exhibitions, theatre productions, internationally acclaimed films, enlightening lectures, dynamic dance, lively music, delectable dinners, and interactive cooking workshops.
In his message about the Festival, the Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas, said: “Through programs, festivals and direct services to Greek community members and friends, the Greek Orthodox Community of SA Inc. has helped strengthen the multicultural fabric of our great state for the past decades”.
The festival will commence with a grand Opening Night and Art Exhibition on Friday, October 6, at the Olympic Hall, starting at 6:30 pm, where the esteemed winners of the Odyssey Art Prize will be unveiled. The festival promises a series of engaging events suitable for all ages, including an authentic Taverna Night, a spirited Gin and Ouzo Night, and a Dinner Show featuring the Greek Swing band ‘Cats and the Canary’ from Melbourne, marking their first performance in Adelaide.
GOCSA President, Peter Gardiakos, praised the festival as a symbol of the community’s resilience and strength, reflecting the sacrifices of ancestors and the preservation of Greek traditions. He expressed gratitude to the organizers, volunteers, and sponsors for their unwavering dedication and commitment to bringing the festival to fruition.
This year’s Odyssey theme will spotlight the “flavours of Greece,” offering the South Australian Community a taste of Greek culture and providing Adelaide’s Hellenic Community a moment of reflection. Hellas Lucas, GOCSA Cultural Committee Chair, anticipates that the scheduled events throughout October and November will elevate Greek culture and values.
Premier of SA, Peter Malinauskas, said “From festivals, dance lessons and language classes to church services and community care for seniors, you have not only enriched our Greek community, but more importantly, you have successfully instilled a sense of pride, belonging and cultural identity to our Greek sons and daughters.”
GOCSA President, Peter Gardiakos, said “The Odyssey Festival is a testament to the resilience and strength of our community. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our ancestors, who journeyed to this land seeking a better life while preserving their Greek traditions. Today, we stand proud as a thriving community that continues to thrive, passing down our values, language, and faith to future generations.”
“I thank the organisers, volunteers, and sponsors who have worked tirelessly to make this year’s Odyssey Festival a reality. Your dedication and commitment are truly commendable.”
