Experience Richard Hamilton’s exclusive 130-year-old vine Shiraz in new masterclass

A new intimate masterclass at the Richard Hamilton cellar door offers wine enthusiasts the opportunity to delve into the remarkable story behind the hero Centurion Old Vine Shiraz.

Richard Hamilton’s Centurion Old Vine Shiraz is not just a wine; it’s a testament to the rich history of one of Australia’s oldest surviving vineyards – the 130 year old ‘Centurion Vineyard’.

It’s recognised as part of the prestigious “Living Icons: The 1800s Shiraz Vines of McLaren Vale,” a distinguished group of only five, that celebrates the elite and rare wines originating from historic Shiraz vines planted in MacLaren Vale the 1800s.

“The Centurion Vineyard consists of a small parcel of 19 rows. While this means a small yield – its focus is exceptional quality rather than quantity,” Cellar Door Manager, Karly Craik says.

With a five-generation family heritage, Richard Hamilton Wines has played a vital role in winemaking and grape growing. The Hamilton family’s pioneering techniques mean that it has maintained some of the oldest vines in Australia and gained a stellar reputation for producing award-winning wines.

The Centurion Old Vine Shiraz is one of those award-winning wines, scoring stellar reviews from none-other than Toni Paterson, a highly experienced wine professional, and longstanding columnist and tasting panellist, Andrew Caillard.

“The combination of site and old vines, together with dry growing (in most vintages), produces lovely, elegant, yet concentrated fruit, showing signs of maturation straight from the vine,” Paul Gordon, winemaker for Richard Hamilton explains about the Centurion Old Vine Shiraz.

“The resulting wine is a testament to the enduring determination and vibrancy of these ancient vines, with its generous complexity, aromatic spice, silky tannins, and a beautiful persistence on the palate.”
