Explore ancient Ngarrindjeri culture with a new indigenous-led tour on Kangaroo Island

Join an indigenous-led tour on Kangaroo Island to explore the rich traditions and stories of the Ngarrindjeri people with Elder Mark Koolmatrie.

A newly launched Kangaroo Island Indigenous Day Tour offers an unique opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage and ancient traditions of the Ngarrindjeri people, led by a respected Ngarrindjeri Elder, Mark Koolmatrie.

Scheduled for select dates from December 2024 through March 2025, the tour invites participants to delve into the indigenous history of Kangaroo Island, known in Ngarrindjeri language as Nurrungaui, “the place of Nurrunderi.” Nurrunderi is revered as the creator by the Ngarrindjeri, and the island holds a special place in their cultural and spiritual narrative.

The full-day tour, which starts and ends in Adelaide, includes comprehensive travel arrangements with morning pick-up and evening drop-off at designated Adelaide CBD hotels, ferry transportation, and coach travel around Kangaroo Island. Participants will benefit from the insightful commentary of Mark Koolmatrie, who will share stories and knowledge about key cultural sites and the indigenous flora used traditionally by the Ngarrindjeri for food and medicinal purposes.

The journey begins with a picturesque drive to Cape Jervis through the Fleurieu Peninsula, followed by a 45-minute ferry trip to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Here, Mark Koolmatrie will lead a 45-minute walking tour focusing on Australian bush foods and medicines. Participants will learn about the cultural significance of various sites and engage with stories dating back to the Kalowinyeri, or the creation time.

A visit to Seal Bay Conservation Park reveals the history of the sealing industry through the perspective of the Ngarrindjeri people, showcasing the deep connections between the Ngarrindjeri and the island’s marine life, particularly the seals. The narrative continues with the story of Nurrunderi, the creator, whose spirit pervades several sites on the island including Vivonne Bay.

Lunch features a two-course meal, giving guests a chance to relax before heading to Flinders Chase National Park. The park is home to Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, which are not only spectacular natural formations but also hold profound cultural significance for the Ngarrindjeri people.

As part of the inclusive experience, guests will enjoy a light dinner before the return ferry trip and coach travel back to Adelaide. The option to start the tour directly from Penneshaw is available for those already on the island, with varied pricing based on the departure point.

Pricing for the tour varies depending on the departure location, with adult tickets priced at $549 for departures from Adelaide, $485 from Cape Jervis, and $383 for those joining at Penneshaw. Reduced rates apply for children. It’s important to note that on-island departures are only available from Penneshaw, and guests opting for this must arrange their own travel to the starting point.

The Kangaroo Island Indigenous Day Tour offers an insightful exploration of the indigenous heritage and continual connection of the Ngarrindjeri people to this unique landscape. The tour provides a meaningful opportunity to understand and respect the cultural stories and traditions that are woven into the fabric of Kangaroo Island.
