August is set to be a month of vibrant art and delicious Mexican food at Mamacita Restaurant and Bar, with the popular restaurant on Pulteney Street showcasing the “Mamacita Frida Collective” exhibition as part of the SALA 2024 festival.
Imagine Frida Kahlo, one of Mexico’s most iconic artists, exploring the modern-day streets of Adelaide. That’s the idea behind the unique exhibition, where over 15 artworks envision what Kahlo might have seen and felt in the city.
From enjoying a peaceful stroll through the Adelaide Botanic Garden in Autumn, to soaking in the lively atmosphere of Adelaide Central Markets, these pieces blend Kahlo’s classic Mexican flair with Adelaide’s contemporary charm.
The exhibition, created by local artist and event manager Melody Joy, features a Frida Kahlo mural by Mimby Jones Robinson and artwork from Rhubee Neale, the Naidoc Artist of the Year.
Mamacita Frida Collective officially kicks off on August 1st and runs until the 31st. It’s open everyday from 9am to 7pm with a special opening event on August 8th from 6pm to 8pm. The best part? Entry is totally free, though a gold coin donation is encouraged to support local artists. Plus, there’s a chance to win a $1,500 prize, courtesy of TRYP, which will also feature the winning artwork in one of their locations.
As guests explore the exhibition, they’ll receive a catalogue to help connect with each piece and imagine Frida’s journey through Adelaide. Judging the artworks are notable locals including Greg Mackie OAM, Penny Griggs, CEO at Adelaide Central School of Art, and Dr. Daniel Connell, Senior Art Educator.
We suggest to come for the art, but stay for the food. Mamacita is known for its mouthwatering Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine, serving up classics like tacos, quesadillas, and nachos, and dishes like chipotle-marinated chicken, succulent pork ribs, and decadent carne asada. For a taste of South American and Pacific flavours, try the yuca fries and cured kingfish.
If you’re a fan of tequila, you’re in for a treat! Mamacita’s bar features over 50 types, including exclusive brands like George Clooney’s Casamigos and Kendall Jenner’s 818. For those who like a smoky kick, their mezcal selection is perfect. Margarita lovers will find 14 different variations, while cocktail enthusiasts can get creative with custom concoctions.
And just quietly, if you’re visiting on a Tuesday, make sure to take advantage of Taco Tuesday – a feast of all-you-can-eat tacos from a special menu for just $20 per person. Or, if dance is your thing, join Mamacita’s free dancing classes every Friday and Saturday from 6pm till 9pm!
Head to Mamacita for the art but stay for the food, and let the restaurant’s blend of culture, creativity, and cuisine make your August unforgettable.
