As the weather gets cooler, we can’t think of anything better than kicking back and relaxing with a glass of wine in hand. And with some brilliant world-class wine regions right on our doorstep, Airbnb is making it easier than ever to get out and experience some of the state’s best-hidden gems.
Airbnb’s latest initiative, ‘Hidden Vines’, is designed to get Aussies to think outside of the box and start exploring some of the lesser-known wine regions, and recent research shows that this is exactly what we want.
Research from YouGov has highlighted that 88 per cent of Australians are eager to explore new wine regions, with many planning to visit these hidden gems within the year. The findings also showed a shift in preferences. While quality wine remains a critical draw, with 44 per cent of Millennials and 42 per cent of Gen Z prioritising it, there is also a significant interest in the cultural and historical aspects. Indeed, 29 per cent of the respondents expressed a desire to delve into the local history and culture.
The analysis also indicated a boost in visitors from Asia, especially in the cooler months, with a notable 82 per cent surge in tourists from China and double the visitors from India compared to the previous year.
In preparation for the upcoming Easter break, Airbnb has collaborated with Mike Bennie, a renowned wine expert, to create the Hidden Vines guide. This guide features a curated list of 12 regions across Australia, complete with recommended Airbnb listings and tips for wine lovers looking for new destinations to explore.
Regions highlighted in the Hidden Vines guide include South Australia’s Coonawarra, Riverland, and Mount Gambier. Each of these areas offers unique experiences that cater to both aficionados and novices in wine tasting.
Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand said, “Our wine regions have so much to offer for families and friends alike.
“It’s fantastic to see that nearly 90 percent of Aussies are keen to explore our beautiful, lesser-known wine regions providing a much-needed boost to local economies with research revealing guests, on average, are willing to spend almost $700 per person on their weekend getaway.
“Now is a great time to list your home on Airbnb ahead of the Easter long weekend and school holidays so visitors can soak up everything a town has to offer, especially local wine and produce.”
Margy Osmond, CEO of the Tourism & Transport Forum also shared, “Aussies love getting off the beaten track and making new discoveries. This guide from Airbnb is a fantastic initiative to promote smaller regions, while also giving travellers a new wine experience that won’t break the bank.
“These places will no doubt benefit from an increase in visitors who will stay for the Easter long weekend or school holidays.”
In each region, the guide suggests different wineries, attractions, and of course, places to stay.
For those heading to the Coonawarra note that the bustling region is known for its world-renowned red wine, while also home to some hidden gems, hand-picked and perfect for a romantic weekend getaway.
If you’re keen to check out a few natural wonders and a variety of outdoor activities, this Riverland is the perfect spot for family getaways.
Mount Gambier is a spot that draws in culture lovers for an inspiring weekend with its vibrant arts scene and picturesque views.
