Explore the haunted halls of Z Ward with a fine wine in hand

Step into the world of the Z Ward Wine Fair, where the history of the criminally insane meets fine wine for an unforgettable experience.

Step into the shadows at the Z Ward Wine Fair, where history, mystery, and wine converge in a historic place, not often visited by people.

This extraordinary event takes place within one of South Australia’s most eerie and captivating heritage buildings, now with a modern twist.

This June, the National Trust of South Australia is unlocking this iconic, historic space, offering a rare opportunity explore Z Ward alongside the pleasures of fine winemaking.

At the Z Ward Wine Fair, you’ll indulge in an exceptional selection of local experiences. Fifteen South Australian wineries will be offering tastings in the cells, giving wine enthusiasts a truly unique experience.

Complementing the wines, a variety of food trucks will serve up delicious bites perfectly paired with your glass. As you sip and savour, enjoy live musical entertainment that enhances the vibrant yet haunting atmosphere of the event.

This exclusive experience is strictly 18+, ensuring a mature environment where history, wine, and music come together for an unforgettable day out.

Built in 1885 to house the “criminally insane,” Z Ward stands as a hauntingly beautiful example of Victorian architecture, with dark corridors and hidden corners that have long captivated locals and visitors.

The massive gates groan open, their iron bending under the weight of time. The loud clank of historic keys echoes through the silence as doors creak open, and a cold draft sweeps through the hallways, carrying whispers of long-forgotten tales.

Each step on the creaky floorboards seems to reverberate with the building’s ancient memories.

Each wine-tasting station, both upstairs and downstairs, allows you to savour exceptional wines while feeling exploring these historic grounds.

“Z Ward’s rich, intriguing history adds so much depth to the experience,” says Jo De Fazio from Union Street Winery, one of the event’s participating wineries.

The Z Ward Wine Fair isn’t just about wine – it’s about the experience of being in a space with a dark and captivating past.

“The decision to host the wine fair in this setting stems from a desire to blend South Australia’s viticultural history with the unique atmosphere of Z Ward,” explains Louise Stanford, Events and Engagement Coordinator, National Trust South Australia.

By hosting such events, the National Trust of South Australia aims to raise awareness about the site’s history, engage the community, and generate support for its ongoing preservation. The Wine Fair aligns with this vision by providing a platform to showcase local produce and foster a deeper connection between the public and the site’s rich heritage.

For wineries like Union Street, participating in the Z Ward Wine Fair is an opportunity to be part of something truly special.

“It’s fantastic to see the National Trust breathing new life into such a historic space,” says Jo.

“We’re excited to connect with both history buffs and wine lovers alike in a venue that feels alive with stories. Z Ward has such a fascinating history, and we’re honoured to be part of this unforgettable experience.”

It’s an event that invites you to taste, explore, and connect with the past.
