Dive into the rich underwater world without the need to get wet this January at the Adelaide Planetarium. The “MEGAfauna of the Great Southern Reef Special,” running on the 16th and 18th of January, offers an exhilarating educational experience for families and children of all abilities.

Organised in collaboration with Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries (EMS) and the University of South Australia 360 Lab, the event features stunning 360° virtual reality footage captured by Carl Charter, a noted videographer. Charter’s recent trip to the Kingdom of Tonga allowed him to record unique perspectives of humpback whales. This footage, among others, will headline the immersive displays attendees can experience.

The showcase aims to bring the depths of South Australia’s oceans to life, focusing on the biodiversity of the Great Southern Reef. Attendees can enjoy virtual interactions with various marine species such as humpback whales, whale sharks, grey nurse sharks, and playful sea lions. Additionally, other marine life like the giant cuttlefish, eagle rays, and the leafy seadragon, which is South Australia’s marine emblem, will also be featured.

Apart from exploring marine biodiversity, attendees will have the chance to learn about the cultural heritage of Sea Country. The programme also highlights the crucial role that Marine Parks and sanctuaries play in nurturing and protecting these ecosystems.

“We are thrilled to offer such a dynamic and engaging way for people to connect with and learn about our magnificent marine environment, using cutting-edge VR technology. It’s an opportunity to see and understand aspects of our ocean that are rarely accessible to the general public,” shared Carl Charter.

The Adelaide Planetarium at UniSA’s Mawson Lakes Campus will house this event. It will cater to a wide audience, making state-of-the-art VR technology accessible in a fun, educational setting. Provisions are made to accommodate people with disabilities, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive experience for all visitors.
