Exploring Adelaide’s Cafes: The Lab’s Award-Winning Menu Experiments with Great Taste

Winners of the 2019 Eastside Business Award for Best Cafe, this local gem plates up food with a scientific take to get customers hooked.

In the mood for a delicious hearty brunch that doubles as a science experiment gone right? The Lab Food + Coffee has just what you need.

Recipient of both the R&CA Best Cafe Dining (Metro North & East) Award and the Eastside Business Best Cafe Award for 2019, The Lab boasts a premium locally-sourced menu, with a scientific twist that will get you hooked.

This quirky place stays true to its name and serves up drinks in real laboratory equipment, making customers feel like they’re conducting an experiment of their very own.

Head Chef and Manager Matthew Wishart describes the cafe as a business with a conscience.

“We do everything we can to support our community, local quality suppliers and charities – reducing waste, minimising our carbon footprint and using enviro-safe packaging where possible,” Matthew says.

The Lab’s Nadia Makovec highlights the importance of the business supporting their local community.

“At The Lab we’re all about delicious quality food and great coffee using fresh and, where possible, seasonal produce from local suppliers,” Nadia says.

And let’s not forget about the food.

If it’s breakfast you’re after, this place has you covered (and all-day might I add).

From savoury classics like eggs benny and smashed avo, to experimental concoctions like apple crumble waffles, The Lab truly has something to suit everyone’s palette.

A decadent sweet option is the ‘Nuts about Chocolate’ french toast, which swirls a macadamia praline, oreo crumb and malt tuille together with Nutella cream and scorched almond ice cream to create a chocolatey bliss.

If you’re looking for lunch options, you won’t be disappointed.

A Lab favourite is the Asian inspired ‘Soba Up Noodle Bowl’, which combines miso glazed tofu, enoki shiitake, broccoli, black vinegar and roasted seaweed together in perfect chemistry.
