Extra Time To Register For Bupa Challenge Tour

merckx2Cyclists keen to take part in this year’s Bupa Challenge Tour have been given an extra three days to register. Registrations were due to close today at 5pm, but will now be open until the same time on Monday (January 14).

Events South Australia General Manager Hitaf Rasheed said more than 5000 people had already signed up to take part in the 2013 Bupa Challenge Tour on January 25.

This year there are four Bupa Challenge Tour distances to choose from: 127km (Modbury-Tanunda), 92km (Kersbrook-Tanunda), 46.5km (Mt Pleasant-Tanunda) and 20km (Nuriootpa-Tanunda).

“The Bupa Challenge Tour gives recreational cyclists from across Australia and around the world the chance to ride a stage of a UCI WorldTour event on the same day as the professionals,” Ms Rasheed said.

“There’s always a fantastic atmosphere as thousands of riders set off with the aim of doing their personal best and having a great time.”

Cancer Council SA is the official charity partner of the Santos Tour Down Under, and hundreds of Bupa Challenge Tour participants are raising money to beat cancer by taking part in the Ride for a Reason campaign.

“Cyclists who have raised $1000 or more as part of the Ride for a Reason campaign will be riding for free in the Bupa Challenge Tour, and we congratulate them on their fantastic efforts,” Ms Rasheed said.

“The Santos Tour Down Under is much more than a bike race and it’s events such as the Bupa Challenge Tour that emphasise how much the community gets involved.”

The 20-kilometre Bupa Challenge Tour option is new this year and was introduced with families and beginner cyclists in mind.

Riders taking part in Bupa Challenge Tour will receive a distinctive jersey to wear during the ride.
On Sunday January 27 hundreds of young riders will take part in the Bupa mini tour for kids presented by UniSA.

Tickets to the Legends’ Night Dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre on January 26 will be available until 5pm on Monday, with attendees to celebrate four legends this year.

Reigning UCI Road Race World Champion Philippe Gilbert, 2010 Tour de France winner Andy Schleck, five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault and Australian Olympic gold medallist Anna Meares will be interviewed on stage by renowned cycling commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen.
