This weekend marks the end of an era for one of South Australia’s most cherished Christmas traditions. The Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt, a magical European-style market in the heart of the German-settled town of Hahndorf, will return for its 10th and final edition, running from Friday to Sunday.
For a decade, this special event has brought together the community in a festive celebration of stalls, music, food, and gifts, turning Hahndorf into a winter wonderland, filled with twinkling fairy lights, traditional decorations, and bucketloads of Christmas cheer. Over the years, the market has become a highlight of the SA’s Christmas calendar, drawing people from both near and far.
The team behind the Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt took to Facebook to share an announcement regarding the future of the event, saying: “Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt was birthed in 2013 by C3 Church Adelaide Hills, with a vision to see our community come together to celebrate the wonderful season of Christmas.
“Over the years to follow, the town of Hahndorf came alive to celebrate together with now a full weekend of trading, markets and Christmas spirit! We hoped our community would embrace this wonderful event and we’re thrilled that it has.
“Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt has been organised and run by a dedicated team and an army of volunteers from C3 Church Adelaide Hills, with countless hours given to bless our community and beyond.
“After much deliberation, the decision has been made that this year’s event will be the last Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt.
“The journey has been unforgettable, and we want to extend an enormous thank you to our incredible volunteers, stall holders and community that have made it so special.”
While the 2024 event will be the last of its kind, it is set to be as magical as ever, with the team determined to go out with a bang. Hahndorf will once again be transformed into a European Christmas wonderland, with festive stalls packed with a range of goodies – everything from unique gifts to children’s toys, beauty products, and health and wellness items, delicious food and drink, and even special gifts for your furry friends.
The market’s European-inspired charm is impossible to ignore. Even with Adelaide’s summer heat and a hot weekend ahead, the fairy-lit stalls, traditional wooden decor, and warm smell of mulled wine take everyone straight to the heart of a European Christmas. It’s the kind of place where you can almost forget the heat and feel as if you’re wandering through a snow-dusted village in the Alps.
As well as all of the stalls and incredible offerings, the C3 Church Band will perform their annual Carols by Candlelight each evening at 9:00pm which is a true highlight of the event. The performance is led by the talented members of C3 Church Adelaide Hills’ Worship Team, and it’s a perfect end to a night at the Christkindlmarkt.
The outpouring of comments and conversations on the Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt’s Facebook post shows just how much the event has meant to everyone who has attended over the years. Its farewell this year is sure to be an emotional one.
While this will be the final Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt in its current format, the team behind it has expressed their excitement for future Christmas celebrations in the community, and they look forward to exploring new ways to come together and celebrate the season in the years ahead.
