The Gays Are Revolting Live is a weekly Melbourne-based podcast that prides itself on honest and open discussions around any issue relevant to the LGBTIQA+ community whilst still recognising their positions as ‘the G in LGBTIQA+’. The hosts Thomas Jaspers, Kyle Dowsett, and Luke Forester (fourth regular Mykiii Rangi was away overseas) were joined on stage by Adelaide’s Dr Gertrude Glossip (Will Sargeant).
The Gays Are Revolting podcast is a relatively new show that started mid-2018. Since then it has received wide ranging success with over 250,000 streams and is expanding into a national live tour series.
The achievements of the podcast were on display with the live recording at Feast Festival 2019. Despite the absent fourth member there was a strong and charismatic mix of personalities from Dowsett, Jaspers, and Forester. Their unique backgrounds and points of view provided an engaging mix of commentary on the selected topics.
For the Feast The Gays Are Revolting Live show, the trio selected porn addiction and homophobia as their main topics prior to the special guest. In the show’s style, there were definite moments of oversharing, mainly from Jaspers and Forester that, even in some of the specifics mentioned, there was a continued casualness in the approach. It maintained the familiar vibe rather than aiming for a purely shock value that appears in some comedic styles.
The topics were all reflected back to their impact within the LGBTIQA+ (predominately G, within the podcast aim). The hosts presented some general background research that blended in with the general laid back approach to the conversation. The use of research showed dedication, including more than just opinions and momentary thoughts, to the podcast and also helped ground the conversations.
The show’s special guest was local drag icon Dr Gertrude Glossip (Will Sargeant). The selection of Dr Glossip was a fantastic addition to the Adelaide show. She was interviewed on her history with the LGBTIQA+ community, from early protest movements, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and local moments in history. Glossip took command of the stage, and created delightful adlib and banter with The Gays Are Revolting hosts.
The show was a great combination of light informative conversation, comedy, and social commentary. It appeared for a one night only event at Feast but The Gays Are Revolting Live is now touring the country with shows booked for the Sydney Mardi Gras and Melbourne Midsomma Festivals.
