A comedy that has us thinking about what it means to be respected - a bit of light lupine laughter
Not just 100% wolf, Freddy is now 200% Wolf! As a sequel to the 2020 Aussie film 100% Wolf, Freddy is back again with a new adventure, and some additions to the star-studded cast. Ms15, Mr12 and Ms 8 and I all trundled along to see what canine (and lupine) capers could happen next!
Freddy is the newest young cub in the werewolf pack, except when Freddy transforms at the full moon, he transforms into a poodle. He’s made some great friends, namely Batty the stray dog, but he longs to be respected as a great leader of the werewolf clan. Batty tries to explain to him in so many ways that respect comes from your character, not your appearance, and whether Freddy is a poodle or mighty wolf makes no difference, but headstrong Freddy is determined to change his appearance, and tries to summon the moon spirits.
This is where everything goes wrong, and while summoning the spirits to help him change, sure, he is transformed in to a strong wolf and is ecstatic, but one of the spirits, a baby called Moopoo, is accidentally also transferred from the moon to earth.
So begins a convoluted tale to get Moopoo back to the moon safely… as along the way, Freddy and friends meet Max, voiced by Jennifer Saunders, who says of course she can be their friend, but of course, she is scheming for the power the moon spirits give. Jennifer Saunders makes an outrageously brilliant villain, as we’ve seen when she voiced the Fairy Godmother in Shrek.
The animation and the colours are just lovely, bright and brilliant, especially Freddy’s pink poodle hair.
Because 200% Wolf is based on a book, it does fall into the trap of wanting to show everything in the book, and do it all in a short period of time. Ms15, Mr12 and Ms 8 did spend a while trying to work it out, and decided that there are a few too many storylines and twists and turns. Adults might need to pay attention and talk it through with younger children. We all liked the characters, and liked the animation – I especially liked Akmal Saleh as a schnauzer!
