A fun movie to watch if you want to zone out and have a laugh
Pitch Perfect’s Sam (Rebel Wilson) and Betsy (Anna Camp), pair up again and once more bring to the screen their comic chemistry with their contrasting personalities. Like their role as teammates in the all-female a Capella group in Pitch Perfect, they are also part of a larger ensemble cast of females, that being the other bridesmaids – Anna Chlumsky as Virginia, Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Lydia, and Gigi Zumbado as Zoe.
Although the film is primarily about the duo’s lifelong friendship, when Sam lets Betsy down by disappearing on her hen’s night and is thereafter demoted from being Maid of Honour, the film starts to explore the wider concept of loyalty to friends, priorities, and expectations.
This is all done is a very light-hearted way as the film is an action comedy where the celebration turns into a hostage situation as Betsy’s fiancé Ryan Caldwell (Sam Huntington) comes from a very wealthy family. The lavish wedding takes place on the Caldwell family’s private island estate, giving the mercenaries a distinct advantage in which Sam, as a world-class secret agent must save the day.
Similar to director Simon West’s Con Air the film focuses on a lone operative in a contained environment, way outnumbered by their adversaries. This time though, there is very little character development, and the fight scenes are far from slick. Nevertheless, I love action films regardless of how unrealistic the fighting scenes are, and this film’s plot was so spoofy that Wilson’s comic persona and outlandishness fit the action-parody tone well, this also being her first real ‘fighting movie’.
It is not the type of film to attend if you want a strong plot, thought provoking themes, skilful stunts, character depth and realism in each scene, but it is fun to watch. Do you need some downtime and relaxing entertainment that you can enjoy with friends? If so, you’ll like this film which allows you to zone out, laugh and feel-good – without walking away thinking about anything heavy or real afterwards.
