Lillian (Maya Rudolph) chooses long-time friend, Annie (Kristen Wiig) to be maid of honor over her new bestie, Helen (Rose Byrne).  However not to be outdone, Helen continues to vie for Lillian’s favour during the pre-nuptial lead up and is helped along the way by a motley group of bridesmaids Becca (Ellie Kemper), Megan (Melissa McCarthy) and Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey).  The result is hilarious with some jaw dropping scenes as you can’t actually believe what you’re witnessing.   This is no romantic chick flick as the misleading title will have you believe.  It is more the female version of the Hangover with a double dose of crass to attract the male demographic.

Bridesmaids, sees the re-teaming of Director Paul Fieg (Knocked Up) and Producer Judd Apatow (40 Year Old Virgin).  Their combined wealth of comedic experience does shines through and is supported by the script. Co-written by lead comic actress Wiig (Saturday Night Live) and Annie Mumolo it conveys the complex relationships women have with each other which can be enveloped by jealousy and possessiveness.  Annie’s down and out character was well developed and her relationships with the other characters, particularly love interest played by Jon Hamm (Mad Men) was realistic in creating a nice balance between humanity and laughter.  Wiig’s performance was solid as was Byrne’s but Melissa McCarthy stole the show as the obligatory “less than attractive but must be in bridal party” sister in law to be.

Just in case there wasn’t enough humour, cameo’s by familiar comics, Matt Lucas (Little Britain) and Aussie Rebel Wilson (Pizza) were thrown in for good measure.
