Dog biscuits!
To say we were happier than a dog with two tails to be able to review this movie is under-selling it! All of us – me (the alleged adult auntie), Ms 13, Mr 11 (has had a birthday since last review) and Ms 6 – had hoped for it as we love pets and superheroes, and to get them together sounds pretty fabulous… but were we barking up the wrong tree? Has this superhero movie gone to the dogs??? Are we now barking mad?!
The movie follows the DC origin story of Superman, with the planet Krypton exploding, Superman being sent by his parents to Earth to survive. At the last minute, his faithful puppy, Krypto, jumps in with Superman, so they head to earth together.
Krypto and Superman grow up together, best friends saving the world, and Krypto knows he needs no one other than his best friend Superman. Krypto’s world is turned on his head as Superman’s relationship with Lois Lane then develops. He meets Ace and the other pets at the Pet Shop, where Ace explains that with a new relationship, Krypto will probably be left out in the cold, friendless, and with no capacity to be a “dog”, as he’s always been a superhero.
Then, the worst happens – Superman and other members of the Justice League are taken prisoner by Lex Luthor, and it is up to Krypto to save the day. But how can he, as when Superman was taken prisoner, Krypto was also stripped of his powers by being exposed to kryptonite?! How will Krypto learn to make friends and accept help?
The pets in the pet shop are just brilliant – Merton the turtle was the kids’ favourite (SHELL, YEAH!), Ace the dog, Chip the Squirrel, PB the pig (my favourite) and Lulu the guinea pig (a truly psychotic villain guinea pig).
Kevin Hart and The Rock together are just hilarious. They feed off each other well, as has been seen in the last two Jumanji films, and in every interview with them both together. They are the perfect casting for the two main characters, Krypto (The Rock) and Ace (Kevin Hart). Note there is a star-studded cast, with Keanu Reeves voicing Batman, John Krasinski voicing Superman and Jameela Jamil as Wonder Woman, to name a few. Kate McKinnon is wonderful as the driven-to-be-psychotic guinea pig Lulu – definitely, do not call her a hamster!
There are a couple of scary moments, especially at the ending, with a big, scary monster – to be expected in a superhero film but might be a bit scary for the under 6s. There are also a couple of “interesting” words said – Merton says, “What the …” and it is bleeped out, causing many giggles, and Ms 13 is pretty sure she heard a four lettered word for poo mentioned. Nothing desperately offensive, but be warned in case your child then comes home repeating it!
All in all, DC League of Super-Pets had us howling with laughter, grinning like a Cheshire cat and flapping with glee like a mad seagull.
