Film Review: Kick-Ass 2

Kick-Ass-2Based on the popular comic book, the first Kick-Ass film came out with guns blazing. Violent, funny and very in your face, its savage heroism created controversy. Kick-Ass 2 continues its foray in fierce realism mixed with high octane action. As well-crafted and performed as the first, the sequel skilfully continues the adventures of unlikely avengers saving the day in a fast and furious world.

Resting after his ferocious battle with Red Mist’s father, (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) yearns for a normal existence. Sharing this is Hit-Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) who wants to retire her vicious persona. Unfortunately their idle is interrupted when Red Mist plots a terrible revenge. Creating a super-villain army, his plans are challenged by a group inspired by Kick-Ass’s exploits. Donning their costumes one more time, Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl leap into the fray with customary force.

Although delivering amazing action and over the top super-heroics Kick-Ass 2 feels mechanical. Whilst the first had a free-wheeling approach in its ode to comic book styles the sequel goes through the motions. It also lacks the forebear’s clever depth with the follow-up’s theme of ‘a hero being more than a costume’ used repeatedly. Director Jeff Wadlow seems more interested in spectacle than characterisation with the new additions given short shrift.

It’s still quite violent but the darkly comedic aspects which made them palatable in the first are missing. This in turn makes those scenes nastier than they need be despite the good CGI. The fight sequences are well staged and the performers certainly earn their money doing them. How their characters handle the consequences of their actions provides some interest, even if it’s somewhat heavily handled.

Kick-Ass 2 isn’t as engaging of the first with an unfocussed narrative and weak direction. The great action isn’t enough to sustain the heroics with creative apathy becoming Kick-Ass’ true villain.
