DVD Review: Take Care

A romantic comedy about a woman living alone who turns to her ex boyfriend to help her out when her injuries from a car accident make life too difficult.

Frannie is going through some hard times. Returning home after being hit by a car, she insists on recovering in her own fifth floor apartment but having both an arm and a leg in splints means she can’t look after herself properly.

Her friends, who generously offered to help her and were supposed to drop in regularly, seem to have found better things to do and, to make things worse, she lives next to a neighbour who is both noisy and extremely selfish.

TakeCareDVDFrannie desperately needs to find some help to prevent her from having to stay with her overbearing sister, so she looks to her ex boyfriend who she had previously nursed through cancer for two years and who she figures owes her a favour or two.

Take Care has an ideal plot for a romantic comedy: the helpless maiden waiting for her knight in shining armour to come and rescue her. It also has quirky and somewhat likeable central characters, but somehow it doesn’t quite succeed.

Leslie Bibb as Frannie is warm and engaging but there are no ‘laugh out loud’ moments. The film is a little awkward in places, much like the full alternative title Take Care Love Accidentally, and it does not contain quite enough storyline or substance for some of the characters. It also lacks the big dramatic romantic moments that the romantic comedy genre usually relies on to melt, and therefore win the hearts of the viewers.

Written and Directed by Liz Tuccillo, Take Care also stars Nadia Dajani as Frannie’s excessively helpful sister, Thomas Sadoski as the ex boyfriend Devon and Betty Gilpin as his insecure new girlfriend who is not at all happy with her man spending time to care for his ex.

Take Care is not a great film but it still has some enjoyable moments for those who like a romantic comedy that doesn’t require much effort to watch.
