Film Review: The Five-Year Engagement

The Five-Year Engagement is a fabulous romantic comedy has been put together by the team of guys who directed, wrote and starred in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This is almost guaranteed to be the "Chick-Flick" of the year!

Director Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) Rodney Rothman (Get Him to the Greek) and writer Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) bring us a romantic comedy different to most. Starting where most romantic comedies end, they look at what happens when an engaged couple, Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, just can't seem to make that long walk down the aisle.

They meet on New Year's Eve at a Superhero themed party in San Fransisco, when talented chef Tom (Jason Segel) was a pink bunny and aspiring social psychology academic Violet (Emily Blunt) was Lady Di. A year later they get engaged. Violet's mother Sylvia is excited (brilliantly played by our own Jacki Weaver) and everything is set, or so we think!

After the wedding date is set, plans are interrupted by an offer of a coveted postdoctoral assignment at Michigan University for Violet. So they decide to postpone their wedding for two years. While Violet develops and flourishes under the splendid faculty advisor Winton (Rhys Ifans in a very different role to "Notting Hill") super-chef Tom makes do making sandwiches at Zingerman's deli.

When Violet's two-year term is extended, it leaves this gorgeous couple with tough choices about a wedding that seems very questionable, – will it happen or won't it?

The Five-Year Engagement has been cast well with fantastic actors. While Jason Segel and Emily Blunt are just as good as they normally are, great surprises come when you see Australian TV legend Jackie Weaver as Violet's mother Sylvia. Then Rhys Ifans's role of a Uni brain is the opposite to the twit-head Spike he played in Notting Hill!

This is a thoroughly enjoyable rom-com with many laughs, a perfect thing to see with the girls!
