Film Review: Twist

A modern-day take on Charles Dickens’s classic tale

Twist is a modern day take on Charles Dicken’s 1838 classic novel Oliver Twist.

Set in the heart of trendy London, it follows Ollie Twist, played by newcomer Rafferty Law, yes you guessed it, Jude Law’s son. Ollie used to go to art galleries with his Mum and ends up orphaned and the reason why he becomes a graffiti street artist.

Directed by Martin Owen and starring a great British cast which includes two-time Academy Award winner Sir Michael Caine as Fagan, Lena Headey as Sikes, Rita Ora plays Dodge and David Walliams as Losberne.

Twist follows Fagan and his street-smart family while they plan the raid of the century, by framing art dealer Losberne for the ultimate payday.

It’s an art heist movie featuring lots of parkour and showcases beautiful skylines of London.

The opening scene is exciting to watch as Twist runs through the streets of London parkour style.

The movie is very loosely based on the novel. Ollie being orphaned is missing having a family. He catches the eye of dynamic duo Dodge & Batesey played by Franz Drameh, whilst being pursued in a police chase. The members of Fagin’s teenage gang befriend him.

They introduce him to criminal mastermind Fagan and give him the option of having a supportive network of chavs around him and taking part in a clever heist.

Fagin and his crew are street savvy and skilful city criminals, and they definitely aren’t strapped for cash. The plot to frame Losberne is clever and daring.

There is a violent scene between Skyes (Heady) and the Police, while Twist is in the midst of committing the crime.

There’s some fun throughout from an overly enthusiastic traffic warden, police inspector and detective sergeant.

If you enjoy watching petty thieves commit the crime of the century then this is for you.
