Production has officially kicked off in South Australia on the next chapter of one of the country’s most successful horror franchises, with the team behind Wolf Creek officially announcing cameras are rolling on Wolf Creek Legacy.

Cineverse and its horror division Bloody Disgusting confirmed the third instalment of the international hit franchise is now in production, with John Jarratt returning as the menacing Mick Taylor.

The new film centres on an American family travelling through the Australian outback whose dream trip spirals into a nightmare when they cross paths with serial killing pig-shooter Mick Taylor. As chaos erupts, the couple’s two children escape, only to be hunted by the infamous killer.

The third instalment reunites Jarratt with franchise creator and original director Greg McLean, who produces alongside Kristian Moliere, Bianca Martino and Jeremy Bolt. South Australian filmmaker Sean Lahiff directs, with a script by Duncan Samarasinghe.

Joining Jarratt in the cast are Ditch Davey, Laura Gordon, Stacy Clausen, Charli Penton, Anni Finsterer, Meg Fraser, Carlos Sanson Jnr, Maria Thattil, Connor Pullinger and Michael Teng, known from Travel Guides, in his first acting role.

“Greg, Sean, Duncan and the whole team are creating a film that Wolf Creek fans will find delightfully disturbing, and we can’t wait to see John Jarratt back on the big screen as the sadistic bushman killer Mick Taylor,” said Cineverse Chief Motion Pictures Officer Yolanda Macias.

The original Wolf Creek premiered in 2005 after screening at Sundance and Cannes, and was dubbed by Quentin Tarantino as “the scariest Australian movie ever made”. Its 2013 sequel, Wolf Creek 2, premiered at Venice and was followed by two spin-off television series for Stan. The first two films grossed more than $35 million globally at the box office.

If you haven’t seen the first two instalments (and you love a bit of gore) then do yourself a favour and use this as your sign to binge them both. We can’t wait to see what unfolds in Wolf Creek Legacy and we’re even more excited that it’s being filmed and produced in South Australia.
