A café in a somewhat hidden spot of Glenelg is endeavouring to redefine the modern café experience in a way that’s worth talking about. With a keen eye on sustainability, art, community, and healthy food options with variety, The Annex Café is a gorgeous little nook with heart.
Owned by UK-trained Chef George Koritsa, The Annex Café is committed to a healthy and diverse menu that caters to most dietary requirements and preferences. The effort George and his team go to is best highlighted by their dedicated vegan menu, which is offered in addition to its everyday menu.
Vegan friends are often left to scour menus at cafes, checking every ingredient, but now the hard work is done for them, with The Annex Café providing a full vegan menu to choose from – a rare sight to see!
Dishing up some refreshed bites and golden oldies, both menus promise to serve a little something for everyone. Notably on the vegan menu includes a vegan and gluten free lasagne, filled with roast zucchini, spinach, mushrooms, and capsicum, layered with Napolitano sauce and cauliflower bechamel sauce.
The Annex Café’s commitment to vegan-friendly foods, however, is only one example of how sustainability has influenced the café’s overall ethos. For example, all eggs and similar products used are sourced from ethical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable sources.
Moreover, the café is a ‘green certified’ venue – an international standard that George and his team make every effort to reach. In essence, Certified Green cafes or restaurants must satisfy a comprehensive list of requirements in areas such as locally sourced produce and how many menu items are vegan or vegetarian.
The menu and sustainability efforts are only a fraction of what makes The Annex Cafe so special. Another key factor is the community-focused atmosphere the team has tried to foster. The ‘social experience’ is integral to The Annex Cafe’s identify.
The Annex Cafe is currently hosting an art exhibition as part of the 2022 SALA Festival, entitled ‘Meroojan’ – a host of mixed media works, created by local Armenian artist, Anahid Paichuk.
Consistent with the café’s own objectives to nurture and support the local community, the SALA Festival aims to showcase local artists of all media and skill levels across South Australia.
‘Meroojan’ is inspired and named after Paichuk’s late father, and his father’s love for the sea. Meroojan was obsessed with boats and become a navy recruit, working on the islands off the Persian Gulf. ‘The Lighthouse’ is one such piece that clearly reflects Meroojan’s story and will be displayed in The Annex Café, among others, until Friday 30 September.
If you’re looking to connect with the Glenelg community, experience a little art, and eat sustainability while you’re at it, you can visit The Annex Café at 3 Waterloo Street, Glenelg.
