Book-lovers better mark their calendars as the Indie Verse Book Event is gearing up to host its fifth year with an expansion of the event this April. Hosted in Saddleworth for the last four years, the festival is travelling further south for a stop in North Adelaide.
The Indie Verse Book Event is all about indie artists promoting their work to a broader audience. Created by Linda Humphries and Portia Stanton-Noble, the event is in safe hands, as Portia said she is an author herself and understands the market.
“I know how hard it is for me to get my books out there, to talk about them, to get them out there, and to find your audience,” Portia said. “You have to go looking for your audience; they don’t necessarily come to you, so I wanted to help people.”

The event is full of notable highlights, including Author Tony Shillitoe, who will present a workshop on preparing work for self-publication, sharing practical advice. Nonfiction readers can also explore the work of Dr Samantha Battams, whose well-researched books include an examination of historical poisoning murders from the last century.
Industry insights will be offered by Dr Rachel Spencer, who will speak about getting books into bookshops, while editor Karen Crombie will share eight top tips for self-editing. Children’s author Lee Speed will also be on hand to launch a new book. Allen Tiller is also a guest speaker and he will talk about his popular South Australian paranormal work.
Emerging writers can speak with Bernadette Eden from SA Writers Group between 2pm and 4pm to learn about available courses and pathways. Rounding out the program, live entertainment will be provided by singer Jamie Moffat, adding to the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of the day.
“We just want to make sure that people enjoy themselves, discover a new author or maybe they’re thinking about writing a book, and they can learn something from the day as well,” said Portia.
