Karrawatta is preparing to host a night of fire, flavour and fine wine with the first ever Burning of the Canes celebration on 11 October.
Owner Mark Gilbert says the ritual is about renewal and marking the start of a new season — the perfect time to celebrate.
“Throughout winter we always have a fire or firepit burning for our guests to enjoy, so fire really is something Karrawatta does well.”
“We wanted a fresh concept to share with our friends and members that celebrates everything Karrawatta while also heralding the new vintage of Tutelina,” says Mark.
The evening will unveil the 2020 Tutelina Shiraz, a wine already proving to be a star.
“The 2020 Tutelina is our third release and, for the third year running, a Halliday gold medal winner. It’s a seamless expression of three regions, with dark fruits, violet and spice unfolding with balance and depth. The wine is both bold and refined, crafted only from the finest barrels of the vintage.”
Guests at the event will be among the first to taste it under the firelit sky, with every ticket including a bottle to take home.
Mark says Tutelina is a story of terroir as much as craft.
“Tutelina’s character is expressed through three distinct terroirs: the cool elegance of the Adelaide Hills, the bold structure of McLaren Vale, and the earthy richness of Langhorne Creek.”
That blend of landscapes is what makes the wine so layered, distinctive and worthy of celebration.

The food will be just as enjoyable, thanks to acclaimed chef Duncan Welgemoed from cult restaurant Africola.
“We’ve been lucky to work with Duncan for a number of years at private functions and events at our cellar door. When we came up with the idea for Burning of the Canes, we knew his Cooking With Fire philosophy was the perfect match for the theatrics of the night,” adds Mark.
His fearless approach will bring heat, theatre and indulgence to the feast, creating a menu designed to meet the Tutelina in both strength and spirit.
For Mark, the event is as much about emotion as it is about food and wine.
“We hope our guests leave feeling refreshed and a little lighter than when they arrived, with a renewed mindset heading into the warmer months.”
Burning of the Canes will be a night of spectacle, indulgence and connection, capturing the essence of Karrawatta in a way only fire and fine wine can.
