FIRST LOOK: A new cafe is serving up Taiwanese bentos and brekkie favourites in the Barossa

Barossa’s new Meet.U Cafe is serving up homestyle brekkie favourites and handmade Taiwanese bentos in a warm, welcoming setting.

A new little café has just opened in Kapunda, and word’s already getting around. Meet.U Cafe swung open its doors in late May, and it’s already drawing in locals for coffee, chats, and plates full of comfort food.

The vibe is relaxed, the food’s fresh, and the menu’s got a bit of everything. One day it’s a full Aussie brekkie, the next it’s a hot Taiwanese bento with pork cutlet and pickled greens. Folks are loving the mix.

“We opened Meet.U because we love food and we love this community,” Yu-Hsuan one of the owners said.

“There aren’t many places around here doing Asian-style dishes, so we thought why not bring a bit of what we grew up with and share it?”

They’ve done exactly that. Western breakfasts run from Saturday to Tuesday, then from midweek onwards, the kitchen turns out Asian-style homestyle dishes that change daily. Come the weekend, the star of the show is their Taiwanese bento boxes — hearty, colourful and packed with flavour.

“Our bentos are made fresh and by hand, the way we remember them from home,” Yu-Hsuan said.

“They’ve got everything in there. A proper main, little veggie sides, tofu, a soy egg, some rice to round it all out. It’s real food, made with love.”

Locals have already taken notice. Some are regulars after just one visit.

“One customer told us it was the best bento they’d had since visiting Taiwan. That kind of feedback really sticks with you.”

Even the name, Meet.U Cafe, has heart behind it.

“We wanted it to be a place where people meet. Meet new food, meet each other, maybe meet part of themselves again. That first meeting is always something special.”

Running a café in a country town takes work, but the team says it’s worth every early start.

“We’ve had so many lovely people come through already. Some come for breakfast, some just stop in for a cuppa and a chat. It’s starting to feel like home in here.”

The café is in its soft opening phase until June 14, with plans already brewing for what’s next. There’s talk of adding more desserts, trying out seasonal dishes, maybe even running cultural tasting nights down the track.

But for now, it’s all about settling in, cooking good food, and getting to know the faces that walk through the door.

If you’re anywhere near Kapunda, this is your sign. Stop by. Grab a coffee. Try something new. Chances are, you’ll want to come back.
