Two sisters from the Adelaide Hills have unveiled their latest venture: SUSA Café.
Co-owned by Taylah and Maddy Canny, the new café is their second establishment in the Adelaide Hills region. The siblings are already known for their popular breakfast and lunch spot, Lady Luck, which opened its doors in January 2021.
“SUSA is our sister store to Lady Luck. While it’s still a brunch place, it is quite different,” Maddy explained. “We’re trying to make a spot where people feel like they’re going to a new and different place.”

SUSA’s ambiance is enhanced by its stunning view overlooking a pond at Aston Hills Estate, where people are invited to sip wine and relax while letting the kids run around on the grassy area outside.
“Both Lady Luck and SUSA are sisters but not twins. They both have their own style,” Maddy emphasised, indicating that each café retains its distinct identity. While Lady Luck and SUSA share the sisters’ passion for quality food and drink, SUSA aims to be a destination spot visitors will travel the distance for.
The decision to venture into a second café was driven by the sisters’ genuine love for the hospitality industry. “Our love for the industry and our love for food and coffee outweighs any common sense,” Maddy laughed. “When this spot came up, we knew we wouldn’t be able to resist,” Maddy says.
The rapid growth of Mount Barker, where their first café is located, provided a strong incentive to expand and explore new avenues within the market.
In 2020, 16,600 were calling Mount Barker home, and by 2040 the council expects that figure to balloon to 40,000, making it the second largest city in SA.
“Mount Barker’s rate of growth is crazy and there’s room in the market for so much more,” Maddy says.
Taylah and Maddy’s journey into the hospitality business was a natural progression, as both sisters have been involved in the industry from a young age.
“For us, there has been no other career options; we just love hospitality,” Maddy shared. The Adelaide Hills region holds a special place in their hearts, as it’s their hometown and the source of their inspiration.

As SUSA finds its footing in the Adelaide Hills, standout items on the menu include the Bahn mi brekkie waffle, a delectable concoction featuring slow-cooked pork shoulder, fried egg, and an Asian salad atop a breakfast waffle.
Additionally, the Turkish eggs served in homemade focaccia have garnered popularity, thanks to the expertise of the café’s talented chefs.
With live music planned for the future, extended hours in the summer months, and a cocktail menu to come, it’s definitely a spot to put on the weekend list to check out.
