FIRST LOOK: Adelaide’s tiny new cocktail spot ‘Bar Bar’ is all about agave and atmosphere

Adelaide’s new 15-seat cocktail bar, Bar Bar, offers an intimate agave-focused experience with tequila, mezcal, and thoughtful service at its heart.

Pirie Street just got a little bolder and a little smaller. Introducing Bar Bar, Adelaide’s newest and tiniest cocktail bar, seating just 15 people and delivering a bold celebration of tequila, mezcal, and stripped-back charm.

It’s a well positioned bar that now provides a waiting room of sorts for people heading out to dinner reservations at the many popular restaurants on the street and nearby events and comedy shows.

This intimate CBD retreat offers a uniquely personal drinking experience where agave takes centre stage. With a name that’s as playful as the concept itself, Bar Bar is exactly what it sounds like. A bar in a bar.

“Simple, straightforward, and a little cheeky, just like the space itself,” says co-founder Matt Harrison.

While small in footprint, Bar Bar delivers a considered and cleverly curated experience. The drinks list leans into agave-based spirits, particularly tequila and mezcal, giving Adelaide drinkers a fresh perspective on a category often misunderstood.

“Tequila is such an underrated spirit, especially in Adelaide. People tend to associate tequila with shots, but it can be so much more: complex, layered, full of character,” Matt explains.

“Like whisky, it varies depending on the village, production methods, and varietals. It’s a beautiful spirit, and we just want more people to explore it.”

Among the menu’s highlights is the Freezer Door Martini, a sleek, batched cocktail that’s chilled to perfection and ready to pour.

“You do all the hard work in advance, batching, chilling, and diluting, so when it’s time to serve, it’s sleek, cold, consistent, and effortlessly stylish,” Matt says.

Don’t expect a full dining menu. Bar Bar isn’t trying to be everything to everyone. Instead, guests are offered carefully selected complimentary snacks designed to support, not compete with, the drinks.

“Drinks are the main focus here. We’re not trying to be a restaurant,” Matt adds.

“The snacks are there to complement the drinks, not compete with them. They’re simple, thoughtful, and designed to hold the drink’s hand, not steal the show.”

The venue’s pared-back interiors and low-lit atmosphere set the tone for a night that feels more like a private hangout than a public venue. In such a small space, the focus naturally shifts to personalised service, good conversation, and being present.

“It works in our favour. We can really focus on being present and attentive.”

Whether you’re a long-time agave lover or simply craving a new experience in the city, Bar Bar proves that good things really do come in small packages.
