A new brewery, wine bar, and dining experience is about to breathe new life into one of Tanunda’s oldest buildings. Launching as a collaboration between Rehn Bier, Forage Supply Co., and renowned chef Kane Boase, Old Mill Brew is the latest destination to stir up excitement in the Barossa.
Josh Helbig from Rehn Bier said the location had been calling to him for years.
“I’ve seen the buildings growing up in the Barossa. We were looking to bring our brewery tap to the main street, and this 170-year-old site became available. It’s pretty iconic,” he said.
Stage one of the venue is already complete, with the team transforming the old flour mill into a 250-square-metre space.

Stage two will expand the footprint even further, with an event space, indoor-outdoor beer garden, and second bar set to launch within six months.
“It’ll give us a 500-square-metre venue in Tanunda,” Josh added.
The partnership with Forage Supply Co. and Kane Boase brings three passionate Barossa forces under one roof.
“Forage were looking for an outlet for their wine brand, and hospitality’s a tough game, so working together just made sense,” Josh explained.
“And Kane is running the kitchen as his own restaurant. He’s ex-Fino, Botanic Restaurant, 2KW, Malt Shovel Taphouse, and Sparkke and numerous other venues in the Barossa.”
The food offering is shaping up as the menu is being finalised.
“It’s not typical brewery food, but there’s an element of barbeque in there,” Josh said.
“The menu’s about 60% gluten free and vegan and vegetarian friendly. We’re trying to figure out how to describe it—but the best we’ve come up with so far is ‘not shit’,” Josh laughed.

From open mic nights to beer and wine paddles, the space has been designed to shift with the time of day.
“You’ll get cosy, bright, airy vibes during the day with sunlight streaming in. As the evening goes on, it gets darker, moodier. It’s all about laid-back energy, live music, and a space locals will want to bring their mates to.”
The team is also preserving the heritage of the site.
“It was originally a flour and chaff mill. We’re using historical finds from the renovation, working with locals to collect and display old memorabilia. You’ll see exposed beams, old corrugated iron, that kind of thing.”
Open seven days a week from 11am, the venue will also be available for special events and functions.
“We’re already getting booked for some Christmas parties and birthdays,” Josh said.
And yes, it’s dog and family friendly.
“We’ve got a little games nook for kids and will ramp that up more as stage two rolls out. There’ll be a kids’ menu soon too.”
Barossa’s history has a new future, and this one’s brewed to be shared.
