Condesa Torrensville has quietly opened its doors recently, offering a new take on traditional Mexican food, and bringing some vibrancy to Adelaide’s West side.
Tucked away inside Hotel Royal on Henley Beach Road, the surprising location hides away the colourful new eatery, which aims to encapsulate the essence and flavours of the beloved Mexican streets.
La Condesa is a beautiful bohemian district within Mexico City. The streets are lined with trees, stunning Art Deco buildings and a bounty of hip and arty boutiques, restaurants and cafes. From cosy and charming bookshops during the day to dancing in the streets at night, you will fall in love with the place. This is the essence that Condesa is trying to replicate, from the massive art mural along one wall of the venue, to the colourful cocktails which jump off the menu at you.
Condesa’s menu is made for sharing but even if you’re flying solo, they can cater to your tastebuds, and there’s even a menu for kids.
Head Chef Ashley Nguyen was born in Australia and completed his apprenticeship at Zapata’s Mexican (North Adelaide).
He has twice won Best Mexican Restaurant in South Australia at Viva Zapata’s (Semaphore) and Mexican Society (Chinatown) in his career as Head Chef since then.
Born to Vietnamese/French and Irish parents, Ashley shows you can excel with any cuisine no matter your background, through passion and dedication.
Living by the motto “food is everything” he has taken every opportunity to develop his culinary skills and knowledge of Mexican cuisine – allowing Condesa to serve you some of the most authentic and modern Mexican dishes in Adelaide.
The food menu includes some delicious choices, including the Hibiscus Kingfish Ceviche, Cauliflower Fito Taco, Softshell Crab Taco, 16-hour Beef Cheek Fajitas & Chargrilled Ancho Chile Octopus.
What we’re excited about though, is their Fiesta Banquet, which is $45pp (min 2 people) that includes three dishes from their entrees menu, a taco of your choice, three dishes from their mains menu, and a dessert. Make sure you come hungry for that one!
There’s also an extensive list of tequilas and mezcals to try, plus some great South Aussie gins, cocktails, and a pretty generous wine list.
For the kids, it’s $12 for under 12s, and they can choose from chicken or veg tacos, nachos, chicken or veg burritos, half beef or chicken schnitzels, fish & chips or nuggets and chips.
Condesa is open for dining from Sunday to Thursday 12pm-3pm & 5pm-9pm, Friday & Saturday from 11am-9pm.
