FIRST LOOK: Ekhidna Kitchen serving food with a view in McLaren Vale

Ekhidna Kitchen has opened its doors in McLaren Vale, serving delicious food in a picturesque location amongst lush vineyards.

Amidst the lush vineyards of McLaren Vale, Ekhidna Kitchen has opened its doors- serving delicious food accompanied by a picturesque view.

Ekhidna Kitchen is owned by couple Erin Mutton and Kane Livingston, which they stumbled upon by chance.

“When we first met (Ekhidna Wines winemaker) Matt Rechner, we thought it was meant to be because ‘Ekhidna Kitchen’ was our initials, EK, so we took that and run with it. We’ve both worked hospitality our whole lives and haven’t taken a leap of faith before, so we decided to do it,” Erin says.

When you walk through the doors into Ekhidna Kitchen, you will enter a super bright, airy and open space. Outside, there is a courtyard area where you can see straight through the restaurant to the vineyard and gorgeous view of the Mount Lofty Ranges.

The restaurant is dedicated to the chef’s degustation menu and is more fine dining, set with white linen and on the ‘classier’ side. The restaurant overlooks over the vines, and is at the forefront of the amazing views.

The courtyard area has a more relaxed atmosphere, stepping down from the ‘fine dining’ offering, and the entire venue can be hired out for functions and weddings. Don’t forget to bring your furry friend along, because Ekhidna Kitchen is dog-friendly.

“It’s not super modern, but it has got a really friendly vibe about it, its really welcoming and just comfy, where you just walk in and you feel instantly at ease. The courtyard is a really casual area, and we’ve got wine barrels and brollies just outside the courtyard, which is a huge open area,” Erin says.

“There is an outdoor bar, so if we have functions and things we can open that up and people can party outside in the beautiful space.”

And, of course, the Ekhidna Wines cellar door will also be open for wine sales and tastings, so pop in and see Matt for a wine tasting, beer flight, or grab a bottle of wine.

Head Chef Kane Livingston has a passion for locally grown and sourced produce, creating culinary delights using fresh and fine ingredients- plus, there is so much produce on premise at the winery, such as fruit trees and veggie patches.

“The food is a bit of everything, it is our favourite things that we have put in there. We have put our heart and soul into the menu; it is not super fancy, but it is really yummy food,” Erin says.

Start with an entree of arancini balls, roasted cauliflower or kingfish crudo before the main event, with dishes incuding market beef, chicken breast, barramundi, stuffed peppers, and more.

They also have a ‘puggles’ menu for kids- a ‘puggle’ is a baby echidna- with spaghetti, chicken bites and squid with chips.

Craving something sweet? Check out the dessert menu with tiramisu, affogato and more, along with a chocolate brulee, which Erin says will be a crowd-favourite.

Erin says Ekhidna Kitchen is family-focused, and family members are helping out within the business- including her daughter.

“We are super family-oriented and Kane and I both have children, we want to get the family involved and make it a real family business, that’s our philosophy,” Erin says.

“This was Matt’s baby and he has built such an amazing business around it, we will only sell his wine, beer and ginger beer because we really do believe in his brand. We feel blessed to have been given the opportunity. Matt has been awesome taking us under his wing and giving us this space. We will be working closely with him, it is a bit of a collaboration with him and us,” Erin says.
