Fresh off their opening last weekend, Ember Specialty Coffee Lab on Ebenezer Place was met with love from the locals. Despite treacherous forecasts urging people to stay home, owners Channing and Ianik said the response exceeded expectations.
“There was a moment where we had a line out the door,” they shared.
Ember was originally a coffee roasting business but when an old clothing store at Ebenezer Place in Adelaide’s East End became available Ianik and Channing both thought “We could make a café out of this.”

Slowing down and turning coffee into an experience is what Ember is all about. While espresso and milk-based favourites are still on offer, the real focus is pour-over, a brewing method that puts flavour, aroma and attention at the centre of every cup.
The owners explained that the coffee varies across a range of flavour profiles, and they are more than happy to help customers find their favourite cup. Some may prefer stronger or lighter options, floral or citrus notes, and at Ember, they help you discover what suits you best.
One of the most notable includes the coffee with notes of sweet lemonade, lychee, lemongrass and lime. A silky-smooth body and lemon acidity creates a fresh citric finish.
Backing Ember’s roots of the coffee roasting business, in the café they only use single-origin beans which highlight the natural characteristics of where the coffee is grown. The same bean can taste completely different depending on how it is brewed, and that’s where the pour-over comes in.
“It’s like wine,” Ianik explained. “You can have the same grape, but completely different results depending on how it’s made.”

For those curious to go deeper, the venue offers a barista-seat experience, an intimate, guided tasting where guests are served multiple coffees brewed in different ways, sometimes using the same bean to highlight just how much variation is possible.
Every detail of Ember is thought out, extending even to the high-quality, pink mugs.
“When you hold yourself to a higher standard, people notice,” said Channing.
In a city full of good coffee, this space isn’t trying to compete on speed or volume. Instead, it invites people to slow down, pay attention, and discover just how much depth can be found in a single cup
