FIRST LOOK: Fika Cafe brings Swedish calm and coconut cold brew to North Adelaide

A new Swedish-inpired North Adelaide cafe is reshaping the way we do our daily coffee run, one matcha cloud at a time.

Sitting along the busy Melbourne Street, Fika is the kind of spot you stumble upon and soon become a regular. Only a month into trading, the cafe has already found its rhythm, drawing a crowd with its fresh, fusion-leaning menu and specialty drinks.

But it’s the ethos behind the space that gives Fika its charm. For owner Feng, the goal was simple – to create somewhere homily where people could slow down.

“The name of “Fika” was inspired by my friend” she says.

A nod to the Swedish tradition, Fika is about more than just coffee, it’s the act of enjoying a moment and connecting, ideally over something warm and brewed.

“Fika” is a Swedish word that means more than just a coffee break. It’s a cultural concept that refers to taking time to slow down, enjoy a coffee or tea, and connect with others… whether it’s with friends, coworkers, or even by yourself.” explains Feng.

The food philosophy mirrors its tranquil aesthetic – clean, vibrant, and a little unexpected.

“Our menu is all about healthy and light options, with a bit of a fusion twist,” says Feng.

“We focus on using fresh, wholesome ingredients, and we love experimenting with flavours from different cuisines.”

The menu includes things like the bestselling Tommy & Sal salami bagel, which is equal parts savoury, tangy, and super satisfying, and the classic Chickn Run, with freerange chicken, avocado and house made pesto aioli.

“It’s the kind of thing people try once and keep coming back for… they’re both super flavourful and fulfilling,” she says.

If bagels aren’t your cup of tea, there’s plenty of açai and smoothie options and something for everyone.

Drinks are just as creative, with specialty sips like the Coconut Cold Brew, and the Matcha Cloud, which according to Feng, is already a cult-favourite.

“The Matcha Cloud is one of our signature drinks.”

“It’s made with a base of refreshing coconut water, topped with a layer of creamy matcha milk foam. It’s light, hydrating, and has just the right balance of earthiness from the matcha and natural sweetness from the coconut. People love how smooth and uplifting it is.”

Fika’s journey into Adelaide’s cafe scene is an unconventional one. Feng actually comes from a background in architecture, but has long been drawn to creating a welcoming space for others and – like many Adelaidians – loves a caffeinated cuppa.

“I’ve always had a deep love for coffee. Opening a café wasn’t always part of the plan, but over time, the idea just kept growing. Eventually, I decided to take the leap and turn that passion into something real,” she says.

“It’s been a huge learning curve, but one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.”

Her architectural eye permeates the space, with a meticulously decorated interior that creates an instant calm. Think wooden finishings, fun Pac Man accents and colourful flower arrangements akin to a Spring daydream.

Looking ahead, Feng plans on updating the menu regularly to continue the fun and surprise customers.

“We love keeping things fresh and seasonal, so we plan to update the menu regularly. It gives us the chance to experiment.”

That means, if you’re longing for a creamy Matcha Cloud or a Tommy & Sal, now is your time. But with new seasonal drinks on the horizon – including flavours perfect for the wintery months – there’s plenty more to look forward to.

Whether you’re after a fresh and perfectly baked bagel or just a quiet moment to enjoy a coffee, this newcomer is well worth a visit.
