Adelaide’s sandwich scene has been going bananas in recent years, an utter delight for fans of delicious smallgoods between soft, freshly baked bread. But Gabagool is grilling up something a little different. The Grange Road deli is expected to open in late November.
Owner, Jimmy has had the idea of opening a fresh sandwich shop on the back burner for a while now. Jimmy owned Neighbourhood Espresso Bar in Prospect before selling the business 6-months ago. In the last couple of years the Adelaide food scene has absolutely exploded with Italian-style panini shops.
“Don’t get me wrong,” Jimmy says, “they’re good! But all of a sudden every single person in Adelaide has started opening one and it kind of killed it for me.”
“I wanted to something a bit different,” Jimmy says. Inspired by Jersey and Philly style deli’s, the kind you see on TV shows, Gabagool will offer big sub sandwiches with the charm of a little American sandwich shop.
“Like Subway but not shit,” Jimmy says, tongue-in-cheek.
Jimmy says, “I’m doing more of a Philly-style hoagie, American big Jersey subs.” The deli will source supreme quality Italian cold-cuts from the likes of Papandrea Fine Foods. Jimmy looks to serve up a neat selection of meatball, turkey and swiss, tuna, and of course, gabagool subs. The deli will also offer freshly brewed coffee, pastries, and soft drinks.
Made famous by Tony Soprano, lead character on turn-of-the-century crime drama, The Sopranos, ‘gabagool’ refers to a cured Italian pork cold cut. Gabagool is the Italian-American accented pronunciation of capocollo.
Jimmy’s deli aptly references the hit TV show with a red-framed artist’s impression of characters Paulie ‘Walnuts’ Gualtieri, Christopher Moltisanti & Silvio Dante, sitting around a cafe table.
“I want it to look like a little sandwich shop in Jersey from the 60s. Bright red and white,” Jimmy says. He’s called up Muchos Studio for the design, who’s cooked up a delightful set of illustrations beautifully encapsulating Jimmy’s vision.
With opening plans of late November, Gabagool is set to be the next Grange Road sandwich hotspot.
