New Greek bistro Ammos is a slice of Greek paradise in the heart of North Adelaide, serving authentic cuisine bursting with a blend of traditional and contemporary flavours. But this isn’t your regular Greek restaurant- it has a special twist.
Located on O’Connell Street, Ammos is a co-owned venture by twin brothers Savvas and Sotiri Vassiliou. And here’s the special part: There’s a hidden underground Ouzo bar, called ‘Mitilini,’ in addition to the main dining area, which adds an element of surprise and discovery to guests’ dining experience.
“The underground Ouzo bar has been a hit with our customers. It’s a hidden gem where they can enjoy a wide selection of Ouzo and other Greek spirits while immersed in a cozy, intimate atmosphere. It has added a unique touch to the Ammos experience,” Savvas says.
The venue captures the essence of Greek culture and cuisine and the interior and fit-out of Ammos have been thoughtfully designed to achieve a modern, European-inspired look with a subtle nod to the name ‘Ammos,’ which means ‘sand’ in Greek.

The venue’s rendered walls feature contemporary designs, creating an inviting and stylish atmosphere with a classy sandy, cement interior adorned with arches. To add a touch of authenticity, the choice of plates and cutlery is in keeping with the theme, a combination which creates an ambiance offering a visually appealing setting for your dining experience.
“We are thrilled with the end result of Ammos. The ambiance, the menu, and the hidden underground Ouzo bar have come together beautifully to create a unique dining experience,” Savvas says.
“When people dine at Ammos, they can expect an immersive journey into Greek and Cypriot cuisine and culture. From the moment they step in, they will be surrounded by the colours, flavours, and sounds of Greece.”

Greek chefs are busy in the kitchen cooking up authentic Greek and Cypriot food. On the menu, you will find exquisite dishes using a blend of traditional and contemporary Greek flavours, and diners can have a complete dining experience finished with Greek desserts and cakes.
“Our menu offers a wide range of authentic Greek dishes. Our chefs are from Greece and want to provide the South Australian public the flavour of Greece. We’ve seen some standout menu items that our customers absolutely love, including our popular starter dips, Moussaka, Pathakia, and our various meat platters have become real crowd pleasers,” Savvas says.
On a Thursday nights, a 4-piece band plays live Greek music and from Friday through to Sunday Ammos have their very own Bouzouki player and vocalist, which creates a great atmosphere throughout the restaurant.

So, whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner, a family gathering, or a place to unwind with friends, Ammos has you covered. The underground ouzo bar is available for hire with catered options and they also host special events and live entertainment.
