FIRST LOOK: Jewels of Thought Records brings hi-fi, natural-wine, and coffee to Adelaide’s East End

A new record store is opening in Adelaide’s East End, bringing vinyl deep cuts, high-fidelity listening, specialty coffee, and natural wine.

A new kind of record store is opening on Ebenezer Place this week, and it’s designed to be about far more than flipping through crates (although we love that too). Jewels of Thought Records is the latest venture from husband-and-wife team Anthony Wendt and Linh Tieu, bringing together high fidelity audio, pour over coffee and unique teas, natural wine, and Adelaide’s vibrant music scene. After all, Adelaide is Australia’s only UNESCO City of Music.

Jewels of Thought Records opens its doors at 15 Ebenezer Place, on Thursday February 12 from 10am to 8pm. There will be coffee pouring, crates of deep cuts to flick through, and music in the air.

There’s another layer to this record store though, and depending on the time of day, you can expect an atmosphere as varied as the vinyl stocked inside. During the day, Jewels of Thought will be a brightly-lit nook to get your hands on those record grails while you order a specialty coffee and maybe grab a pastry as you leave with a couple of 12-inches. At night, the vibe will shift to a lively spot to grab a glass or two of carefully selected wine upon the exceptionally matched backdrop of Ebenezer Place.

The venue, first and foremost, is a record store. But there’s plenty of thought poured into its other identities. The cafe will serve specialty drinks like Japanese pour-over coffee and tea varieties, all with a distinctly Asian influence, shaped both by Anthony’s travels and Linh’s heritage.

The drinks offering centres on slow-crafted coffee, tea and specialty brews, beginning with a daily batch brew featuring two rotating single origins from small farms around the world. A pourover option is available hot or iced using single-origin coffees described as wild, seasonal and true to their place of origin. Small farm, hand picked tea is served by the pot, alongside an iced Japanese milk brew made through a traditional 14-hour cold immersion process, and a single-origin cold brew, also steeped for 14 hours. Iced Uji matcha and iced hōjicha are also available. Rounding out the menu are a selection of Mischief Brew sodas. Traditional Vietnamese sweets made by Anthony’s mother-in-law, and Korean pastries will also be available.

By night, the wine bar setting will be host to laidback, intimate DJ sets scoring the East End backstreet, with capacity for in-store performances and Q&As in the future.

“For me, the record store was just another avenue to share my knowledge and my passion with the community,” Anthony says. “The main focus is bringing incredible music into Adelaide and knowing that such amazing music is circulating around this city.”

“It’s very much going to be a multifaceted art space with the potential for DJs, in-store performances, and album launches… allowing a space for music to be talked about and enjoyed outside of the usual 2am elements,” Anthony says.

At the heart of the room is a custom-built, high-end hi-fi sound system handmade locally by Micah True Fidelity, featuring valve and tube pre-amplification. “It’s a pretty special set up,” Anthony says.

The interior leans into a calm, Japanese-inspired aesthetic of wood, metal, and concrete flooring, deliberately designed to encourage people to pause. “In the daytime, I wanted to create a space where people can actually just stop, sit, and listen to music while having a beautiful specialty coffee or tea,” Anthony says.

Beyond the physical design, the deeper goal is community. “It was important for me to create a physical community space where generations can come together,” he says. “You can have an 18-year-old talking to a 70-year-old about a song. That is one of the main pillars behind what I’m doing.”

Choosing Ebenezer Place was no accident. “Ebenezer has always been that artsy community hub for me,” Anthony says. “One thing led to another, the stars aligned, and here we are. It’s very important to me to be bringing my version of an arts-based community space back to this street.”

It’s not the first time Jewels of Thought Records has brought its far-reaching collection to Adelaide. In fact, the store was previously in the Edments Building above Gawler Place. But the new space allows it to blossom into a new concept serving food and drink as well as just wax.

Outside of the store, Anthony is heavily involved in the music industry, including producing under the moniker Oisima. He also performs frequent DJ sets and radio shows in Adelaide and beyond.

Jewels of Thought Records opens on Thursday February 12, perfectly timed with the start of the Fringe. We can’t wait for this unique new East End addition.
