Carrick Hill is preparing to step out of the daylight and into something far more magical this winter, as the historic estate is transformed into a glowing William Morris-inspired wonderland after dark.
From 9 to 26 July, William Morris Winter Wonderland at Carrick Hill will take over the much-loved house and gardens with large-scale animated projections, immersive storytelling and wintery food and drink, giving visitors the rare chance to experience one of Adelaide’s most beautiful heritage estates in a completely new light.
As night falls, the façade of the historic Carrick Hill home will become a living canvas, with Morris’s intricate patterns blooming across the stonework, windows and doors. Vines will climb, flowers will unfurl and woodland creatures will emerge across the building, drawing on the natural beauty and richly detailed designs that made Morris one of the most influential designers of the 19th century.

Known for iconic patterns including Strawberry Thief, Willow Boughs and Trellis, Morris was a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, with a design legacy that continues to feel timeless. This winter, those works will be reimagined through light, movement and projection, creating a dreamlike night out that blends art, history, nature and technology.
Visitors will be able to wander through the illuminated gardens, soak up the winter atmosphere and enjoy mulled wine and seasonal food from the team at Rozelle’s. Those wanting to make a full night of it can also book in for a cosy dinner at Rozelle’s before or after exploring the grounds.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Arts Kyam Maher said the event would showcase Carrick Hill in a new and memorable way.
“Carrick Hill is one of South Australia’s great treasures — a remarkable time capsule that captures life in days gone by.

“This is yet another event right here in South Australian that showcases our state as a destination for world-class cultural experiences.
“Visitors will experience the estate in an entirely new way at the William Morris Winter Wonderland; classic designs brought to life with cutting-edge technology.
“William Morris holds a special place in the hearts of so many people in South Australia, and Carrick Hill is the perfect magical setting to celebrate his work. Winter Wonderland at Carrick Hill is a unique opportunity for locals and tourists to experience this beautiful estate after dark, as well as a chance to enjoy the stunning views of the Adelaide city lights.”
The event also taps into a fascinating South Australian connection. Adelaide was the biggest Morris & Co clientele base outside Great Britain, with the Barr Smith family among the major collectors of William Morris wallpapers, textiles and furnishings. Many of those pieces remain in Adelaide today, with Carrick Hill holding significant works, including a three-panel embroidered screen designed for the Barr Smiths.
Carrick Hill Director Heather Croall AM said the estate’s history made it the perfect setting for the winter experience.
“William Morris Winter Wonderland at Carrick Hill will offer visitors an entirely new way to experience this extraordinary place.
“Carrick Hill holds a genuine and significant connection to William Morris through Ursula Hayward’s family, the Barr Smiths, who were major clients of Morris and whose legacy is reflected in the collection of William Morris works held at Carrick Hill.
“Seeing the house and gardens transformed through light, projection and storytelling will be truly unforgettable; William Morris designs and Carrick Hill lit up like you’ve never seen.”
Running across three winter weeks, the event is expected to draw both local and interstate visitors, positioning Carrick Hill as one of Adelaide’s must-visit seasonal experiences.
Tickets for William Morris Winter Wonderland at Carrick Hill are priced from $18 to $37, with bookings available at www.carrickhill.sa.gov.au/events/wmww.
