McLaren Vale’s cult favourite pizza spot, Pizzateca, is reopening this Saturday August 3rd with a brand-new look. After undergoing renovations, the local gem is ready to wow guests with a fresh vibe and an even more inviting atmosphere (if all goes to plan, of course).
Pizzateca’s Owner Tony Mitolo says that customers won’t recognise the inside or the front of the building. While the dining space remains the same, the entrance and interior have undergone a dramatic makeover.
“The whole inside of the restaurant has been completely gutted out, we’ve opened up the front of the building so it’s really open,” Tony says.

Once a cellar door, Pizzateca was purpose-built and served its purpose well. But what began as a simple cleanup – a fresh coat of paint and a bit of sprucing up – quickly escalated into a full-blown revamp.
The team has tiled the floors and walls, opened up the kitchen, and created a more spacious and airy bar area. Plus, they’ve reimagined the front of the building to enhance the overall feel.
“A lot of stuff people don’t see either, like the wash rooms that are now so much more efficient,” Tony says.

The renovation was about more than just aesthetics; it was about improving the space and accessibility.
“It’s just time. It was time to do it, its been eight years,” Tony says.
“We do a big spring clean every season, but it needed a coat of paint, and we just went a little bit further with it.”
Tony says his business partner Tim puts it really well, saying: “This is like a mature, adult version of Pizzateca.”
Indeed, the refreshed look is more refined, incorporating a new colour scheme with a touch of Brunswick green alongside Pizzateca’s iconic pink and mint.

Pizzateca’s journey started in 2016 as a pop-up at Alpha Box and Dice, but it soon found its permanent home in McLaren Vale. Known for their authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas, Pizzateca has become a local legend. Each pizza is crafted from hand-stretched dough to a quick cook in a 400-degree Stefano Ferrara wood-fired oven straight from Napoli. Their Diablo pizza, with its spicy kick and house-made honey chilli sauce, remains a standout favourite.

Using traditional techniques and locally sourced ingredients, like Virginia-grown Roma tomatoes for their sugo, they’ve managed to bring a slice of Italy to SA. Their talent and dedication was recognised last year when they were honoured as the best pizza in the state by South Australia’s delicious 100 list.

Pizzateca’s famous Gelateca will also reopen alongside the restaurant this Saturday, offering the beloved gelati its known for just in time for spring. Head down to McLaren Vale this weekend to experience Pizzateca’s stunning new look and be among the first to enjoy this local gem’s fresh transformation!
