FIRST LOOK: New authentic Italian deli and eatery Tonino opens in Goodwood

Tonino Deli has opened its doors in Goodwood authentic sandwiches, coffee, wine, cocktails, spritzes and more.

Picture yourself meandering down the cobblestone streets of Italy, casually peering into the cozy corner deli of your neighborhood. There, you’re not just met with shelves adorned with the finest quality produce and artisanal goods but also with warm conversations with the proprietors who feel like family.

Now, the much-anticipated Tonino Deli has opened its doors in Goodwood, aiming to recreate that authentic Italian experience.

Taking a contemporary approach to the traditional European deli, Tonino offers a vibrant space where patrons can indulge in authentic sandwiches, coffee, wine, cocktails, spritzes and more.

Co-owned by siblings Anna-Lisa Barone and Nicholas Barone, Tonino draws inspiration from their familial heritage and their successful establishment, Side Hustle.

“We aim to preserve the essence of a true ‘deli,’ stocking shelves with the finest Italian products, from pasta to olive oil, all either authentic, homemade, or specially sourced,” shares Anna-Lisa.

Echoing the charm of Italian delis, the venue boasts a classic black and white checkered floor, lively prints, and artworks that capture the spirit of Italy. The colour palette, reminiscent of an Italian summer, reflects various foods and produce offered at Tonino.

“We’ve chosen hues ranging from vibrant pistachio green to warm tones of wheat and flour, lively orange representing our Aperol spritz, deep amaretto for our rich coffee and wine, and olive green symbolising our array of small goods like olives,” Anna-Lisa explains.

Emphasising transparency, Tonino showcases its meats and cheeses freshly cut for customers to see, mirroring the traditional deli experience where products are openly displayed.

“When you step into an Italian deli, everything is out in the open. We want our customers to see and select their ingredients, maintaining that authentic connection to the food,” says Nicholas.

True to its Italian roots, Tonino is a family affair, with Anna-Lisa, Nicholas, and their extended family deeply involved in the venture.

“From my brother and me as co-owners to my husband, who has played a significant role in renovations and social media, and even my dad lending a hand in the kitchen, Tonino is truly a family endeavour,” Anna-Lisa laughs.

Inspired by their grandmother’s deli in Italy, the owners aim to continue her legacy in Australia while infusing modernity into the concept.

Named after their grandfather, ‘Tonino’ pays homage to their familial heritage, with many menu selections being favourites of his or inspired by his recipes.

Focusing on authenticity, Tonino offers a range of Italian specialties, including homemade sandwiches, freshly baked bread, and unique pastries like maritozzi and pasticciotti.

Tonino teases with its porchetta sandwich—a savory blend of pork belly roast, Italian pickles, and agliata, crafted from their family recipe.

For coffee enthusiasts, Tonino introduces the Cremino, a sugar coffee cream for espresso, a Naples specialty not commonly found in Adelaide.

While Tonino acknowledges the popularity of sandwiches and great coffee, the team remains dedicated to delivering an authentic Italian experience.

“We want Tonino to be more than just a place to grab a quick bite. It’s about celebrating our heritage, sharing our family’s recipes, and creating a welcoming space where customers can connect over delicious food and drinks,” says Nicholas.

Drawing inspiration from their successful venture, Side Hustle, Anna-Lisa and Nicholas aspire to create a community-centered space akin to the hidden gems found in Italian villages.

“After the success of Side Hustle, we wanted to bring that same sense of community and warmth to Tonino,” Nicholas explains.

“With our roots in the area and a clear gap in the market, King William Road felt like the ideal setting for Tonino,” Anna-Lisa concludes.
