FIRST LOOK: New CBD dining spot Longplay Bistro fuses Modern European with vinyl soundtracks

New CBD dining location Longplay Bistro has opened its doors on Pirie Street with European food, wine, and vinyl records.

Longplay Bistro from the team behind renowned establishments Clever Little Tailor and Pink Moon Saloon is the new spot to be on Pirie Street, offering a unique fusion of food, wine, and vinyl records.

The co-owners, Henry, Marshall, Dana, and Lenin, have added a new venue to their list of successful ventures in the West End of Adelaide to bring their long-held dream of a bistro to life.

“Introducing food has been a passion of ours for a long time. The other venues have a strong wine and cocktail vibe, so a natural addition is to add a more complete venue to the collection,” Marshall tells Glam Adelaide.

“We want to take people from start to finish. Strong hospitality is our favourite thing to do and it’s an art form. We want to greet people at the door, all the way through to dessert at the end. Hopefully this venue enables us to do that.”

“We’re jokingly calling it everyday luxury. We’ve long admired restaurants that take care of people and make sure they’re having a special experience, and we want to translate that depth of hospitality here at Longplay Bistro,” Marshall says.

At Longplay Bistro, diners can expect an array of elevated modern European bistro classics crafted by co-head chefs Jude Hughes and Calum Horn, who bring a wealth of experience from renowned establishments like Three Blue Ducks, You Beauty, and South Australia’s own Summertown Aristologist.

The menu boasts offerings such as house-made pastas, locally sourced ribeye on the bone with béarnaise, Hahndorf venison tartare, and a delightful sea urchin butter flatbread.

“I think we talk a lot about food that’s wine adjacent, the two go hand in hand. We also wanted to serve up food that we enjoy ourseles; dishes that are a little bit saucy and a little bit indulgent. We’re not shy about flavour,” Marshall says.

The experience is complemented by an extensive wine list featuring international favourites and local gems, as well as a selection of rare Japanese whiskies for connoisseurs to enjoy.

What sets Longplay Bistro apart is its commitment to providing a musical backdrop. Lenin Paunovic curates a vinyl LP-only soundtrack, delivering an auditory feast via a Funktion One sound system and custom-built sound insulation.

“The idea is to provide a human experience by playing records back to back. We want to add that human touch to the bistro. Imagine sitting at bar and we’re flipping records where we can tell you where it’s from and why it’s on. It’s all about the depth of the experience,” Marshall says.

The bistro’s interior exudes warmth, with retro-style decor featuring coppery and wooden tones, with warm colours. Guests can also enjoy a secluded private function space with street views and a striking wine wall.

“To be honest I’m shocked how true to our vision the bistro has turned out. We essentially created it in our heads – we did a lot of it ourselves. We knew the long bar, which Sam Weckert who is the designer and maker behind Tiger Build helped build, would be a major feature for us. It’s made from Tasmanian Black wood which is what the bistro tables are also made from,” Marshall says.

It’s created a space that feels luxurious but not over the top. “Unpretentious is how we’d like to put it,” Marshalls tells me.

Longplay Bistro is located within a Renew Adelaide Space on Pirie Street, a not-for-profit organisation providing opportunities for businesses to test their concepts in flexible, rent-free spaces before committing to long-term leases.

“I think there’s a lot of potential on Pirie Street. It’s one or two places shy of walking down and deciding what to eat, but maybe Longplay Bistro adds to the flavour of the street and helps the ‘mid-town’ area grow. We want to generate a great community here,” Marshall says.
