Step into the all-new dimly-lit small bar, 10 Gallon Hat, in the heart of the historic Port Adelaide. The 1880’s built venue blends American charm with Australian hospitality, giving chic country vibes.
From the moment you cross the threshold, you’re whisked away to a world brimming with old-world allure. Antique furniture graces the space, an old piano stands strong with beer skulls and candles burning, all while cowboy boots line the walls – all setting the scene for a truly rustic bar experience.
Inspired by the eclectic vibes of Austin, Texas, and the soulful allure of New Orleans, this dimly-lit establishment is a refreshing alternative to the traditional brewery and pub scene you’ll traditionally find in Port Adelaide.
“We’re looking to bring a dimly-lit small bar vibe to Port Adelaide, reminiscent of our travels in the US,” says owner Dylan Nettleton, also speaking for his partner and co-owner Anatasia Costopoulos. “The ambiance is old-world, with timber accents creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.”
Taking cues from their experiences in America, 10 Gallon Hat—aptly named after the iconic wide-brimmed cowboy hat—channels the vibrant energy of American-style bars. Inspired by locales like Rainey Street in Austin, Texas, where decaying California-style bungalows have been transformed into a charming bar district, each venue exuding a house-party atmosphere, 10 Gallon Hat brings that same laid-back yet lively vibe to Port Adelaide.
Drawing from their extensive knowledge in the hospitality industry, Dylan and Anastasia have crafted a menu that celebrates the best of both worlds. There’s a carefully curated selection of craft beers, South Australian wines and classic cocktails with a twist.
“We’re proud to showcase the finest craft beers from both local and international breweries,” Dylan says. “Our rotating taps ensure that there’s always something new and exciting to try, especially for the beerheads,” Dylan laughs.
“Additionally, our wine list highlights the best of South Australia’s vineyards, with seasonal selections to keep things fresh.”
Signature cocktails which are on rotation include a riff on an Espresso Martini, basically made with cognac and whisky coffee liquor instead of vodka, plus classics like Amaretto Sours and Negronis.
Complementing the drinks menu is a selection of Charcuterie-style small bites, including cheeses, meat platters, and olives.
10 Gallon Hat will offers incredible drink specials and a range of old rock n’ roll and country music tunes to christen the venue. There’s plenty of space with alfresco dining, the bar and also a beer garden. “Our beer garden, set up with with wine barrels and festoon lights, provides a garden oasis which we will expand as time goes on,” Dylan says.
“I grew up near Port Adelaide, and coming back here feels like coming home,” he shares.
“We’ve cornered a hole in the market here [in Port Adelaide], people have been asking and are looking for something like this. Whether it’s for a date-night, clock-off drink, it’s here to be whatever you want it to be.”
