FIRST LOOK: New Euro-inspired artisanal bakery Crafers Bakehouse opens in Adelaide Hills

A new bakery, Crafers Bakehouse, opened in the Adelaide Hills with fresh daily produce using locally sourced ingredients.

If you’re someone who loves the irresistible scent of freshly baked pastries wafting through the air, then the new bakery in the Adelaide Hills, Crafers Bakehouse, will be one to check out.

“It’s an artisanal bakery with a European twang, featuring beautiful red brick and cobblestones. We knew there wasn’t a bakehouse around, and we thought we could liven up the area with a beautiful bakery,” co-owner Sarah says.

“The community is really getting behind us, and the support has been wonderful. Especially knowing we are a family run local business and have 5 kids, the eldest bring 14 and working in the bakery and the youngest bring 5 months old.”

The attention to detail is evident in the venue’s design, which blends modernity with classic charm. There will be wooden ceilings and décor, creating an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of old British and German heritage buildings.

It’s a place where visitors can witness the baking process firsthand, while enjoying that classic bakery aroma where goods are made on the premises.

At the heart of Crafers Bakehouse is a commitment to supporting local businesses and embracing the Adelaide Hills community.

“In our short 3 weeks of being open (which feels like a lot longer than that), we have paired with J & S Fielke Adelaide Hills Vineyard using their Chardonnay in a Mushroom and Risotto pie (vegan). We are also donating any end of day produce to ‘the Hut Community Centre’ in Aldgate,” Sarah says.

The bakery’s dedication to community extends beyond just the ingredients used.

“Other than immediate family, we have 7 local staff, using local products and produce, such as DeGroot coffee and Fleurieu Milk.”

The magic behind Crafers Bakehouse lies in the expertise of Tristan, head baker and Sarah’s partner, who brings over 20 years of baking experience to the table.

“Tristan has been baking for over 20 years, and he’ll be in there every day baking fresh goods on-site. He’s the heart and soul of the business and very passionate about it,” Sarah proudly shares.

“Venturing out on our own means Tristan is able to play with flavours and design so he can create his own magical goods and put what he’s learnt over the years into his own bakery.”

As for herself, Sarah (a project manager), is taking a break from her regular role to help launch this exciting venture. Together, they are poised to create a bakery that reflects their shared passion for high-quality products and exceptional flavours.

Crafers Bakehouse’s offerings include a range of pies, pastries, and bread, all crafted with care and precision.

“We’ll have all the classic goods like meat pies, donuts, and loaves of sourdough. We’ll be a traditional bakery, emphasising and supporting local, baking everything fresh daily,” Sarah assures.

While the bakery primarily focuses on take-away, there’s also outdoor seating for those who wish to enjoy their treats in the serene ambiance of Crafers, surrounded by lush trees and heritage charm.

What sets Crafers Bakehouse apart is not just its delectable baked goods but also its innovative approach to creating an all-encompassing experience.

“We’re so close to Mt. Lofty Botanic Gardens, and we’ll have produce baskets that people can take into the gardens for a lovely picnic. Crafers is a great stop for travellers; it’s the only town you can drive in and drive out of back onto the freeway,” Sarah says.

“Crafers Bakehouse [is] full of local produce, and we can’t wait for people to see it, smell it, and taste the freshness. It’s going to be a wonderful addition to the Adelaide Hills.”

You can head to the bakery’s grand opening on February 3rd which will have the local Kingswood Collective string ensemble playing from 11.30am.
