CBD Korean BBQ joint Chunky Obba Gogi serves up mouth watering specialty dish

The new Korean BBQ kids on the block specialise in succulent cuts of meat and its own range of marinade giving it a point of difference to the rest.

Korean BBQ restaurant, Chunky Obba Gogi, has been taking the CBD by storm with its succulent cuts of meat and its own range of marinades.

The eatery which opened less than 6 months ago is no stranger to leaving mouths watering with owner Regina bringing traditional Korean to Adelaide through her specialty dish, Korean Sashimi.

The dish is created by using a specially made sauce that marinates delicate pieces of crab or shrimp that are then eaten raw – as traditional sashimi is.

“No one else in Adelaide is doing this,” says Regina. “It’s a special Korean dish that is very popular in Asia but we haven’t been able to find it anywhere in Adelaide yet, so we thought we’d make our own!”

The international student from China moved to Adelaide back in 2014 but it wasn’t until her partner Sangmin joined her during the pandemic that they decided to follow their dream and open a restaurant with Sangmin serving as the main man in the kitchen as head chef.

Meat is the obvious star of the show here with varying cuts of beef and pork to choose from ready and waiting to be grilled, by you, in true Korean BBQ style. But it’s the special marinades that set Chunky Obba Gogi apart.

“We use the sauces to create different tastes,” says co-owner Regina Wang. “Particularly on the wagyu beef ribs, the marinade makes it almost sweet.”

The fit-out is sleek, modern and lively – representative of the food and experience because as those who are accustomed to a Korean BBQ know, the eating part is only half the fun.

Designed for sharing, Korean BBQ can be a world of excitement as the raw meat comes out ready for you and your table to show off your grill skills.

It’s the perfect arrangement for larger groups of people and particularly benefits the indecisive among us who want everything and nothing at the same time.

It’s this that makes Korean BBQ more than just a meal but entertainment at the same time. Amidst the smoke-hazed room, it’s not uncommon to lose track of what it is you have ordered, but it’s all just part of the fun.
