A new South African deli has opened in Adelaide’s southern suburbs, bringing with it traditional South African treats and sweets.
Miekie’s Pantry is born out of a love for baking. For a while, Miekie’s Pantry has been distributing their traditional South African baked goods around the state, but now they’ve created a central location for customers to purchase their treats from.
“It all started from a love of baking. We started by baking rusks, which is a South African treat that you dunk in your coffee or tea,” shared the owners of Miekie’s Pantry.
“We always baked for a hobby, and that’s exactly how it started. Both me and the wife loved baking. Our brand name is Miekie and me. Miekie is the nickname her parents gave her, and ‘me’ refers to me!”

On offer at the new store will be everything from the rusks they started with, to a bunch of South African treats that are made around Australia and imported straight from South Africa.
A standout is their biltong, a type of air-dried and cured meat.
“It’s the Rolls Royce of jerky, but you’ll offend me if you call it jerky. Biltong is dried beef, which is spiced with coriander, vinegar, oyster sauce, salt, and pepper.
“We get our biltong from a local supplier, Henk’s Kitchen, and also from a South African shop in Melbourne. Basically, biltong is similar to jerky, but it’s not the same at all.”
Biltong is cured and dried, then enjoyed with cheese and crackers, can be eaten by itself, or even in a sandwich.

In addition to biltong, they’ve also got different South African meat and sausages from specialty butchers around the state and from Melbourne. As they are known for their baked goods, some other favourites include koeksisters, a type of syrup-drenched doughnut. They make outstanding milk tarts.
“We bake our own milk tarts, and I can tell you, if you have ever had a custard tart, there’s no comparison to milk tart, it’s 100 times better.”

Miekie’s Pantry opened Saturday just gone, and the team were met with overwhelming community support.
“The support was tremendous. We’re really humbled by the support, honestly. We opened on the 14th, Saturday, and it was absolutely amazing.”
The team shares that they’ve got new stock coming in this week, and they think they’ll be fully stocked again by the weekend. They’re open every day, so if you’re looking to try something new, or after some of your South African favourites, this is just the spot!
